Non-OEM 996 Roof Rack options in 2024
Looking for a roof rack for my 996 coupe, but the only option I've seen readily available on the internet seems to be a new OEM rack through Suncoast Parts for $775 USD. I understand the Porsche tax, but that seems a bit steep when standard Thule racks sell for quite a bit cheaper on the used market. I also watched this review of OEM vs. Thule systems
by Norwegian Car Guy and actually think the Thule system might be a better option for my purposes.
The issue I'm running into is that it looks like you need a Thule adapter (183100) in order to fit the Thule system to the Porsche and I can't seem to find that adapter online anywhere.
Any folks know if there are Thule roof rack systems that work well with the 996 that are easily available on the used market? Also open to any other roof rack suggestions (or even an OEM used if possible, although those seem hard to come by and it sounds like they can get a bit noisy)

I have the Thule kit and pedestals for square bars.

used it for skis and carrying a set of wheels to the track
I will sell my 3100 kit.

Yes, that is the Amazon UK retail price until it got discontinued. Newer kits still costs the same. Ebay roof rack seller is selling it for absurd prices.

I have the oem rack for my 996, pretty sure it’s made by Thule.
I have the non oem Thule rack on my Panamera. Only difference I can tell is it says Thule on the towers instead of Porsche!

Do you know if the mounting feet for your Thule rack would work with your 996? I've read you need adapters, but if not, I would just need to know what kind of mounting feet you have.

Getting under the Porsche RTS MSRP isn't guaranteed (finding parts), but I've been quietly taking names to make a batch of Yakima-specific landing pads. The rack system I designed uses Skyline towers and Jetstream bars so it's lower, more aerodynamic, and slightly wider than the RTS.

Pretty good actually! I just received two layers of rubber and rubber foam that I need to bond together before sending to the waterjet guys to make my gaskets. Once we have gaskets in hand it's another month or two until the aluminum landing pads come in from China.
I'm looking forward to having a roof box back on my car too, I need to haul stuff too regularly to use the 996 much but now I can make excuses.
