Default S2 trans, with NA 5th gear??

I have to do my clutch, because its slipping, and I have an S2 trans im wanting to put in. But I know it will run higher revs cruising in 5th on the highway, which is the only downside. I have heard of putting the NA 5th gear in the turbo trans, but what about the S2??

To the best of my knowledge, the S2 and turbo trannies are the same and use the same gearsets, just with different final drive ratios.
If an NA 5th fits a turbo trans, it should fit the S2 as well.

heres a chart I found. Im sure the gears will swap, but what will that do for the RPMs at 75mph?

I put an S2 tranny in my 951.
IIRC...the input shaft & 1st and 2nd gear are case hardened.

I was playing with a ratio calculator, seems like the change on the s2 trans to the NA 5th, difference is some what minimal.

How swappable are all the parts? I mean I want the S2 trans for improved off the line performance. but it it would be at 3100 RPM (with a 285/30/18 tire) at 75MPH

where as if yo put the NA 5th in the Turbo trans, that makes 75MPH at 2500.

is it possible to mix and match so I can get the off the line performance of the s2 with the Cruising of the NA 5th??

Not sure on that top speed in each gear column is suggesting?

I'm pretty sure I have a S2 with a short 5th in my race car, but I've never shifted it into that gear on my relatively slow track.

I missed that.

My recollection was that a 951 gearbox and S2 r&p was the best combo for spirited / track driving but yes a bit too short for hwy runs.

Everybody sure that you can swap an N/A 0.730 5th gearset into a Turbo trans? The Turbo/S/S2 trans guts are beefier than the N/A transmissions, and not all the parts are interchangeable. Everything is compatible between the S2 and Turbo trans. I'd verify the N/A gear swap can be done without concern.

The S2 R/P with the 0.829 Turbo 5th is a little buzzy at highway speed street driving, compared to stock Turbo gearing. The standard 0.778 S2 5th is better for street driving and if you need the top end on track (Daytona, Brainerd, maybe nowhere else in the US). That said, I had a 944S that was originally a street car, and I don't remember thinking that was too high in the rev's on the highway. You don't really want these cars too low in the powerband.

Yes, only the 5th will swap

You don't want the NA gear set, it lubricates the 5th gear needle bearing differently than does the S/S2/Turbo version of the transmission. The Turbo 5th gear set has the same ratio and is what you want.

Regarding the hardened input shaft, it was introduced for the 944 Turbo S and supersedes the original S/2/Turbo input shaft. It is not clear if or when VW ever installed it in the S and S2 transmissions at the factory.
