Hi All,
After selling my 981 last year and replacing it with an S4 to accommodate a growing family, I just picked up an '09 987.2 base as a compliment to the Audi. Loving the Cayman so far but it is so quiet, especially coming from my FVD Brombacher equipped 981. So I am actively on the lookout for an aftermarket exhaust for my 2009 987.2. I would love a Borla but open to any aftermarket system really. Tough to justify the $2k asking price for most of the new catbacks for a 10 year old car so hoping someone has a used system in good shape they are willing to part with. Would prefer a local pickup (I'm in MA) and would likely drive an hour or so to pick it up. Having said that, would also gladly pay for shipping if the price is right.
Thanks

Hey, we'd be happy to help. I'd like to take care of you on our Valved Exhaust System. Our mufflers are very high quality, designed to fight drone and you get two different sound levels. If you're going to spend money on a system, it should offer superb sound quality to match the refined nature of your Cayman. I'm sending you a PM now.

Agreed. I've just bought a 987.2 base Cayman also and am looking for the same as you. I'm leaning towards the Carnewal GT exhaust (which is a modified version of the stock mufflers). I think it runs $650 when you return your stock mufflers as cores. People rave about them!

Carnewal mod is not as effective on 987.2. Porsche moved second cats from the mufflers to the headers on these models. Since the main improvement of the Carnewal mod comes from removing the secondary cat, which in 987.1 model is in the muffler, whatever other magic they do inside the mufflers is not that noticeable, at least not to my ears.

A better mod is to remove the secondary cat from the header, or even better is to get headers with 200 cell cats, like the Soul ones for example. The latter option will improve sound and power too!

Contemplated the carnewal mod but when you factor in shipping, $150 each way (I’m on the other side of the country as Cantrell) and the need for a new tip like dream2 it’s damn near $1,400 and, as mentioned above, not sure it is a drastic enough change over stock. Might be a great option if you wanted something very subtle however. I have my DD S4 for subtle, I am looking for something more characterful for the Cayman.

And as far as headers, I am in MA and they just got even more stringent on inspections/emissions late last year. They now have video cameras in the bays. It’s getting so ridiculous that many shops that performed inspections have now stopped, such as my local porsche independent shop. So aftermarket headers, with cats or not, I’m trying to stay away from.

Happy to say that after much deliberation and research on my end I have decided to pick up a new SOUL cat back for my car. It seems the used exhaust market for the 987.2 is non-existent but, honestly, after doing some homework it became clear that a new solution was my only option and, just as clear, that SOUL was the best solution for me. Have to say my early interaction with Mike at SOUL has been nothing short of outstanding. If the customer service is any indication of the product, I will be a very happy customer! Keep an eye out for my review once I get t on the car.

Thanks - I didn't know that! I just saw Gert Carnewal's description of the difference between the 987.1 and 987.2 cat positions. If I was to switch the headers out for ones with 200-cell cats and leave the factory mufflers in place, would that give a better bump in performance and sound that switching the muffler alone?

Yes, there will be a noticeable gain in power and sound.

I have a 987.2 Cayman and initially I got the Carnewal mod expecting better sound. I found a used set of Cayman R mufflers and had them shipped to Cantrell in Seattle who made the mod. After installation I was quite disappointed. I even called Cantrell to make sure they actually made changes to these mufflers. I played around with various tail pipes/tips but I was not satisfied with the sound - it was still too subtle. That's when I looked into headers.
It just makes so much sense to replace two restrictive factory catalysts with a singe high-flowing cat. And the results exceeded my expectations! The sound is much better, and the car is so much more eager to accelerate. It transforms the car and made it way more enjoyable to drive. There is some drone but It doesn't bother me.

Oh and keep in mind an important advantage of Soul - lifetime warranty including track use. No other manufacturer offers that.

Curious to hear how you like the Soul catback, given the comments above suggesting you really need to treat the factory cats to get good sound. How much did the Soul system cost? Thanks!

I will let you know for sure. They arrive in a few days. As far as price, I would reach out to SOUL. Retail price is $2,700 for the valved 987.2 catback.
