That's a 2.5lb bottle? Wow, the one in my car must be a 10lb.

Well the basic purpose of this thread is already served - awareness!

If every driver added an extinguisher of any type I think we'd all be much safer.

I have a healthy paranoia about fire. I have 5 different extinguisers at home in strategic locations...

I carry 3 extinguishers in my truck 2.5lb Halon & dry chem units in back & a 1lb dry chem close to hand. My thinking is the dry chem mainly for general external use - or someone elses car. The halon for engine fires or real emergencies. The truck has engine deployment plumbing just from the front grille area.

My GTS has 2.5lb halon & 1lb dry chem also - largely the same reasons - except here the Halon is to hand and the engine deployment system works from the drivers seat.

I don't think you can ever be too prepared - personal safety is paramount - but watching my GTS burn to the ground for lack of the right extinguisher or an effective means to use it is not my plan...

Be aware that an extinguisher alone may not be enough to save your car... if you must open the hood to use it effectively you are creating a significant personal risk.

Bob - the thing is - I know how much gas the fuel pumps can deliver and also how the car is wired up and some of the potential of that scares me...

Porsche engineers are really smart when it comes to many very complex things. I can't tell you the number of times I've puzzled out some apparently wierd way of doing something only to appreciate how smart it was.... But the simple things like fusing supply lines and putting the fuses right at the power source seem to have completely eluded them...

I have plans to change it all over time - but its a lot of work and I drive it every day - so gradually bit by bit its getting 'fixed'.

As mentioned use EXTREME care if you open the hood with a fire going on ....one of our customers burned both hands and his FACE !!! (think very , very bad sunburn )when he popped the hood and the extra oxygen caused a huge ball of fire ! A 2.5 lb dry chem is about 10 seconds of poof ....When Mr Ott's freon substitute ignited at the dyno session they blew off several extinguishers before that fire stayed out.....

I carry an unsightly 5 lb Halon extinguisher behind the driver's seat. I wish I had a better spot, someplace where it doesn't become a flying projectile. Even with new fuel hoses in most places, I still think it's a good idea to carry.

I carry both a 2.5# and a 5# in my sharks as I know from first hand experience that 2.5 is NOT enough. Something like what Alan has put on his GTS would be best in an engine fire situation so one wouldn't have to reach through flames to open the hood and at the same time at more oxygen to the fire.

I always thought a few of these placed around the engine bay would be a good idea....would buy some time and you wouldnt have to pop the hood to fight the fire initially...fully automatic..heat of a flame melts the tip and the extinguisher discharges.

It was easy. Don't know that it's "ideal," but it was easy.

Here's the fire extinguisher bracket mounted on the 17 mm bolt of the driver-side shock tower in the first pic, and then here's the mounted fire extinguisher.

Since it's not "ideal," I suspect that lots of people could suggest improvements, however, my goal is *first* to have working fire protection under the hood...then improve on that, if need be, later.

Goal: done.

 

Took my shark for a drive, and after both cooling fans kicked on I put my laser thermometer on the fire extinguisher above. Temp: 114 degrees F.
