Mounting is still holding a month later. No false discharges, either.

In the past discussions on this, the issue was the mess the dry chemical ones make. That may be a secondary consideration, but the consensus was cheap was not good. If the car survives, you will have a huge mess to clean up. And as mentioned there is some chance that stuff will get into the intake. I don't know how much time and money nodoubt has in his car, but my car and my time is worth waaaay more than a Walmart fire extinguisher. YMMV.

First, this thread is showing two different units: one extinguisher is dry gas Halon 1211...no mess after a discharge in your engine compartment: http://www.firefight1.com/prod_ss-30.html ... while the other (Wal-Mart) extinguisher is handheld and meant for being used inside the driver/passenger compartment as a last resort (i.e. you are about to be burned alive, do you care about chemical residue on your carpet or do you want to live?).

Second, the *car* is secondary. You want a cheap automatic fire extinguisher in your engine bay to:
#1: give your passengers more safe time to exit your burning vehicle
#2: give you some limited protection if you are pinned in by a crushed door, roof, or windshield after a wreck (e.g. large SUV decides to sit on top of you)
#3: give you some limited protection if you are knocked unconscious (e.g. hitting your head on the side window because you were street driving with no helmet because helmets aren't cool off of the track)
#4: give your car some limited protection

People will spend more money on floor mats, MP3s, and CD players than on hyper-critical, ultra-important fire protection...because we as humans are more wired for entertainment/pleasure than survival...but it doesn't have to be that way.

How hot would the engine compartment get on a hot Florida summer day? LOoks like a 155* and 175* triiger is available. Would the 175* be enough in Flordia to prevent accidental draining of $125 to the ground?

Think I may get one, $125 is cheap compared to a rebuild or skin grafts..

I currently have the smaller "Wallyworld" style mounted next to the driver's seat. But it's not for fires.. Its self defense against road rage jerks. Quick shot in the face should give me a couople seconds to get out of dodge...

Exactly. My point.

Actually since the points were made for both in cabin use for personal protection (and possibly hand held use in general/for others cars) as well as needing a means to safely deploy into the engine compartment - you can have both with one extinguisher.

I have a hand held 2.5# Halon extinguisher in the car. I have added an approx 12" long flex nozzle so its easier to direct this usefully (including for use on others cars). This nozzle is also a quick release fitting that can be connected to plumbing installed within driver reach that feeds directly to 2 nozzles in the engine compartment directed at the fuel rails each side from the rear.

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...eferrerid=6055

This was relatively inexpensive - the fire extinguisher & mounts were >95% of the costs.

I'm not really a fan of an automatic system for the reasons I've stated earlier... all too easy for deployment to be unintended or perhaps just untimely... Even at just 30 MPH Halon dissapears very fast from the engine bay.

But it does indeed serve the purpose of protecting an unattended car... YMMV - But I don't worry about that one so much.
