i recently traded my 991.1 targa 4S for a 991.2 C2S cab with PSE. i loved the aesthetics of the targa but never fell in love with the AWD or the targa mechanism. i really missed the functionality of the cab and the minimal wind buffeting, hence the trade. i absolutely love the way the 991.2 handles and drives, but it obviously doesn't sound anything like my previous targa with an AWE switchpath exhaust or my GT4.

after reading through a bunch of threads, i am thinking about putting some sport cats on the 991.2, probably from fabspeed. from my research it seems like the cats are the best place to get better sound where as an X pipe won't do much as the stock PSE muffler is already pretty free flowing.

i've found a lot of advertisements from the vendors, but not a ton of real world experience from other owners. does anyone have any experience or recommendations in regards to the different sport cats out there?

i am not really looking for HP gains, just the best bang for the buck way to make the car sound as good as it can given the limitations of the smaller turbo engine. thanks in advance!

Wow! That car is STUNNING!

Caveat - no experience specifically on a #2 car.

With a lot of boosted cars (and this has NOTHING to do with vs sound comparisons) the Turbo not only mutes but also muffles is a "boomy" way. Sport (or Delete) will go a long way to help.

With regards to performance - we know that catbacks don't do anything but a sport cat on the headers will not only add power (and a bigger gain than a naturally aspirated) but also reduce lag. You may not notice now as many have testified but you'll not notice it even less with sport cats.

Outside of a tune - this is potentially the most significant power increase mod.

thanks for the nice compliments! the miami blue has really grown on me. i wasn't so sure about it when the first press photos of the 2017's were released. it is crazy how different it looks in different lighting. here's another pic with its roommates.

also, thanks R Rated for the points. i like the idea of doing the fabspeed headers and sport cats. i think i will probably go with the sport cats initially and then eventually add the headers.

This is actually a very good question and I'm also considering going this route. I have a TargaS4 + power pack on order and know I will want a better exhaust note. Changing exhausts as we know can be quite pricey. I have found at least with BMW Dinan M5 and Merc CLS63 Renntech both turbo cars going to sport cats did improve sound and according to dynos at the time produced more power which is of course a bonus and something new exhaust systems failed to do.

Just a thought.... may be more headache now and later to just change cats out.... I believe you'll have to cut and weld vs bolt something in and the cost of labor will all but negate just buying sport headers(with cats).

I have the Fabspeed headers and sport cats and I'm very happy with it. These new turbo Carreras have a deeper pitch than the N/A cars. The Fabspeed doesn't change that but it's definitely louder--a little louder in standard mode and distinctly louder in sport mode. It sounds terrific, both inside and outside the car. It's enough louder now that I turn them to the quiet mode when I pull into my neighborhood.
As far as performance goes, it does seem a little more responsive and pulls harder at all rpms. Of course that was my initial feeling but now it feels normal. The sound is still terrific though and that was my objective.
I don't know about any cutting and welding, I had a indie do the installation. They didn't mention anything other than it was a straightforward install.
Recommended (and by a fellow MB owner).

Its a direct bolt in swap for both the headers and cats, which are completely separate pieces.

Yes, that’s why I mentioned affect on lag... from the turbos.

I didn’t know they were separate since the aftermarket options I’ve seen all look like they are welded together.... guess I’m incorrect about the factory parts.

Lets not assume a simple bolt on based on other threads.... my exhaust was but others have very different testimonies.

Ive had this work done and watched my shop install them, which is why I'm offering insight, from experience.

Its 4 bolts, 2 clamps, removing and transferring the heatshields and reattaching the o2 sensors.

It couldn't be more bolt on. Anyone who is having difficulties just wasn't prepared to do it. The exhaust may need to be shifted or removed, but other than that its straightforward.

Figure 3 hours of labor for the cats. The tubular headers should improve exhaust flow and spool, but the turbos spool instaneously already. I mean its a twin turbo'd 3.0L setup, theres no lag, we're not dealing with a large single unit like the high horsepower 2JZGTE's or the like.

The headers wouldn't change the exhaust note really and be about another 1.5 hours of labor. Probably not worth it if sound is your ultimate goal. Then again you could go catless if your really want to get rowdy.
