New old guy here to say Hello
Joining today. I am picking up the hated silver colored 996, fat as a pig, C4 Cabriolet with the twist-o-flex body on Monday. It has 57,000 miles on it, and hopefully won't grenade the original IMSB before I can do a combined 60K/clutch/A/O separator/IMSB replacement. It is slightly odd buying a Porsche model that gets so much criticism. My prior Porsches were a 77 911 Targa, an 81 SC, and an 82 SC. All sold in the 80s for peanuts, and now too expensive to buy back. Since I won't be getting any new revenue from working now that I am becoming a deadbeat (well...except for the wife's "To Do" and the dog's demands) I wanted to keep my entry level cost down. I have a terrific 2017 Silverado with the heated/cooled seats, on-road and off road suspension, and fairly good "trunk" space, so I'm thinking this vehicle will likely see less than 5000 miles per year, which is why I bought the convertible. Not sure why I bought 4 wheel drive. Probably a couple of hundred pounds of weight that isn't necessary for me. (Plus my unneeded 30 pounds of flab).
Been reading as much as I can, being a newbie to the world of water cooled Porsches. I LIKE the 2002 headlamp covers (allegedly to look more like the Turbo, and less like the Boxster), so I'll take the discount on these instantly grenading IMSB loser mobiles with the ugly front lights. Having now read that opinion about 3,000 times, I'm ready to move on to things like:
1. How often should I replace the battery, and which is the best battery for a 2002 C4 Cab?
2. Is there a PCA group anywhere near Aptos, California and are they any fun to go places with?
But mostly, I just thought I would post to say "Hello" (probably in the wrong forum, and soon to be flamed and excommunicated I suspect).
Best,
Larry

Welcome! There are many retired(deadbeats), me included, on this forum and from your first post it appears you should fit in quite well. As is said here "pics or it didn't happen!" Post up the car, please.

You're close to a couple of PCA regions:
LPR focuses mainly on social events with some driving mixed in.
GGR has some social stuff with more focus on driving (DE, AX, fun runs)
If/when you join PCA, you pick a region to be your 'main' region, but you can typically participate in events put on by any region- and there are a bunch in this area.

I think you'll find, at least, based on my experience, that you won't meet any of that criticism from the public. I and a few other members on a joyride last night ran into a family of very enthusiastic 911 fans who were fawning over our 996's.
Welcome to the madness, friend.

Welcome, and good luck with it! It seems like your skin is plenty thick for 996 ownership Best advice re: battery life is to get yourself a "battery tender" (battery tender is actually a brand name - which are very good, but any brand will do as long as it's got "smart functions" - i.e. won't burn up your battery) and hook it up when the car is going to sit for long periods of non-use (anything over two weeks or so). Also, important to lock doors when it's going to sit for any more than a day or two.
** I had a questionable battery (Interstate) when I bought my car - the local Auto Zone told me it was shot and wouldn't take a charge... Fortunately I was close to an Interstate facility/warehouse and the battery was still under warranty. While the battery was still technically under warranty, they told me they thought they could re-charge it with a "deep overnight charge", and they'd have to try before replacing. If it didn't work they'd give me a new battery. Well, it worked and 3 years on, the battery has never given me any trouble - even when the car sits for a week or two without the tender.
