The first generation Cayenne was quite capable off-road. Porsche originally targeted Range Rover, and their vehicles have traditionally been all about off-road capability first, with comfort and road manners coming next. The handles are useful on steep grades, although I’d admit the passenger’s side handle is probably more useful.
Eventually, Porsche realized that less than 1% of Cayenne owners leave the pavement. The newer versions of the Cayenne and the Macan are less capable off-road, but they are monsters on the street. The handles have carried over since the original.
I drove my 2004 Cayenne S off-road many times, and it never let me down.
I think that they have given you a Cayenne and not a Macan. Those are just grab handles to facilitate entry, exit or just to hold onto on a rough ride.
