Good morning,
Out for a drive in 1980 original SC targa yesterday and go to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear and the clutch pedal goes to the floor and never pops back up. Ugh! I tried pulling it up, nothing. So first question is, what happened? Any help is appreciated. Car is now sitting in friends garage about 20 miles away, I want to get her back home to my shop so I can add pictures if needed. I can start her in 2nd gear and drive it which is how we got back to his garage. I need to go 20 miles home, is it ok to start in 2nd and drive 45 mph back? All this in 2nd gear. to stop I have to shut it down, then restart in 2nd.
in addition, I am first time Porsche owner and not familiar with this clutch cable setup.I have replaced many of hydraulic master and slave cylinders but this is mechanical cable setup I believe from what I have read. I also searched forums for this issue but not able to come up with much.
Hi..it could be several things...What is not normal that you cannot pull it back. That would point to broken pin on the pedal cluster cross-shaft
number 2 on this pick
Then it could be you helper spring on clutch arm number 19
Hi Ivan, Thanks, When I pull up the clutch pedal it goes back down to the floor position, very odd, nothing seems loose or broken in the pedal cluster so I don't think there is an issue with the pedal.
I'd start with the simple and see if your clutch cable is broken. Looks like normal resting position on the back end. So if your pedal is on the floor the cable either snapped or it broke the clevis pin st the front. Jack it up crawl under and see if you can pull the cable out with your fingers. I bet it snapped 6 inches from the back if it did indeed snap.
Hi Iceman, thanks for your help. cable with the black sheath? which way am I pulling? When I lift the pedal up to normal position it goes back to the floor?
when I loosen the bolt next to the metal part of the cable, opposite the clutch cable boot there seems to be tension and the cable doesn't seem to be loosening where I can pull it down, Its allowing the clutch shaft to move I believe.
Had the same thing happen to my 78sc,fortunately in my driveway. Turned out that the roll pin that attaches the cross shaft to the clutch pedal snapped. Removed the pedal assy and drilled it out for a bigger pin. Proporsche posted a drawing for you, as he quoted, part is #2
Good luck
ok the whole mechanism moves the lever and cable to the right of the accelerator, so I don't believe there is a broken pin. I hear something like a cable hitting near the shifter when I move the pedal up and down, how to I get access to that area?
just found this orange wire not connected to anything? Any ideas where that may go? Thanks, still working on the clutch pedal issue, I can feel the cable in the access area behind the shifter, but its not moving backward, just bowing inside the tunnel it seems?
