Thinking about adding a Rear Spoiler to my 928 Spyder - opinions?
I'm thinking about adding a rear spoiler to the back of my 928 Spyder to give the rear end some character. It's difficult to find one that has the right dimensions and also kind of follows the curve of the 928 rear end.
I considered:
a gurney flap or lip spoiler (would have to be completely custom to follow the curve and then taillight angles)
and various low pedestal spoilers, but when mounted to the top side of the trunk don't look quite right to me and make the rear of the car look very short
Tried an add on version from AIR but would take too much fabrication and was kind of flimsy.
Talked with Hans at SITM about modifying a rubber OB hatch spoiler, but since my trunk is flat and the hatch of the 928 is angled, it would be too upright I think and they all have cutouts for the wiper arm assembly
Found the one below that I think I might like - it was damaged in shipment and before I decide to have them ship the replacement thought I'd throw a few pics out there to get opinions from you guys.
The bottom mount would be painted to match the car and the CF wing actually complements the rest of the CF theme on the interior of the car (seatbacks, speaker mounts, gauge pod backround, etc) Mounted to the truck angle gives it exactly the right cant (almost flat and just tilted forward a bit), makes the rearmost point of the spoiler curve even with the back of the rear bumper, and the curves come back around on the sides to end in an appropriate place on the body, though the spoiler has a continuous curve and the rear of the car has more abrupt angles at the tailights.
Anyway, I took some with the top both up and down. The first pic below is one I took of the car in it's current form and the back looks too flat and plain to me. What do you think?
I think it helps the lines.....breaks up the flatness of the rear deck and 1/4 s . Masks the lower location of the lights in the AIR faux S-4 rear "bumper" less obvious.
Plus originality is no longer an issue with your 928. Go for it !!
If you are, the one you have looks nice. I would suggest not having it overhang the rear as much as in the pics, but that's me.
I think a "duck tail" spoiler like Tony has on "Just Peachy" would be the best.
You could do a mockup in wood. I think a 4x4 would give you enough height & width, just saw & sand it until the shape is what you want. If you overdo it and take too much material out, just get another 4x4.
I would start with a '45 degree right triangle', with the long side being the upper front. Maybe recess the lower rear a bit as it goes down, maybe not.
I think the direct rear view is the best, but don't like it from other angles. I agree with Joe, a duck tail or lip spoiler may work best. Wonder if a 944 spoiler could be adapted? It's trunk is flatter.

With the decision being almost unanimous, I told the seller to not send a replacement and refund the money, so the car will stay unwinged, for now at least.
