Default "Pencil in Coke bottle" rattle - SOLVED

I've been complaining of rattles my entire ownership of my 991 Targa. I won't recap them here, but my post history has more than you want to hear about them.

I'm happy to report that I've killed another one, and I share the info here in case it helps others.

I've had a weird sound like a pencil rattling around in a Coke bottle forever - more prominent on rough pavement.

I've been blaming the Targa lid and I've done all manner of things to try and find it and secure it.

Well, I finally found the real cause - it's the two panels under the spoiler that you remove to take off the rear bumper.

At some point, they both got damaged and were just put back as-is. I found this while washing the car, I was wiping under the spoiler and noticed the right one wiggle under my towel.

The pin that secures it is half gone. I found the same issue on the left side also.

Fortunately they are cheap, I found them for under $7 each. For now I just removed them and I'm enjoying the silence.

Last remaining rattle: the rubbery creak from the Targa lid. Probably unsolvable.

Almost two years, 3 different dealerships and at least 4 weeks in the shop for this!

Oh, those panels. The plastic tabs break. Happened on my car. It's amazing that Porsche has so many plastic items in the engine bay, which heat cycles every time you drive. All those plastic parts become brittle within a couple of years. Then the tabs break. Seems like a lot of the 991 is a model airplane snap-together kit. Sort of insulting on a $125K car.

If you DIY your oil changes you'll also notice that the engine sound pad will start sagging down after a couple of years. This has been a standard feature of the 911 since 1965. Porsche still hasn't figured it out. For such smart engineers they can be pretty amazingly dumb.

Your rubber seal makes that "squeaky" sound? Have you tried Gummi Pflege?

Glad you found the culprit.

All this time, I figured you would eventually find, under your seat, a coke bottle with a pencil in it.

I'm just overall generally surprised how flimsy tabs on interior panels are as well...... they break just by looking at them.

My Targa has no rattles, but then I have sport exhaust always on and music turned up. Your car looks awesome by the way.

Years ago I had a maddening squeak on my E46 M3 and my dealership put something called a Magic Ear on it, basically listening devices at strategic points on the car. Quickly isolated the sound and fixed it. I couldn't believe it. Every high end dealership should have one of those devices.

Thanks. I seem to be the only person with Targa rattles; everyone says theirs is just fine.

Mine was a launch vehicle so it was as 1.0 as you can get.
