Default When did single mirror cars finish? '79MY car..

Hi guys, I came across a car advertised as a 78 which in the picture has a single drivers door mirror. My understanding is that the very first cars had only one mirror, I would love one of these.

However the VIN plate says 928 01 and is 9289100057.

This makes the car the 57th ROW 79, which is cool, but as a 79MY impossible to have been from the first single mirror cars?

I like the car, it is manual, non sunroof, and has a pretty good green paschas interior. Original colour seems to have been pale green metallic...but the owner is slow and confusing to contact, and it is 5 hours away. The car has been repainted and so am guessing they just didnt attach the mirror..?

Any advice welcome. Cheers! :-)

This is the 47th 1979 RoW car (The first production car was 9289100011 ).

The passenger side mirror was an option up to the 1986 MY, but this may change from the original delivery country of the car. Some importers have asked for a different equipment.

To my knowledge, the very last car with only a diver side mirror was a very early 1988 928 S4 Club-Sport

Thanks for the great info!

It will have been purchased 2nd half of '78 I guess.

So, I am hungry for info - can you also explain the difference between this type code 928 01, and another 79 I looked at which is 928 02? Was there a 928 00?

Where there material changes between 78MY and 79MY?

How many 77 and 78 cars were there roughly, do we know?

The information I can find lumps 77-80 cars together.

Thanks for this, I have been around rennlist for a long time with my 912, 964, 996T and 911SC, but I am new to 928s..

Cheers

There are no official 1977 928.
All production cars are 1978 MY or later.

It seems that 3860 1978 were produced, for both (US/Can and RoW) markets, vs 5437 for the 1979 MY.

To my knowledge, 1978 and 1979 are nearly identical from a color and interior trim point of view.

Thanks. My SC is oak green but I am banking on this 928 being lind green, an awesome 70s combo. Its dark blue right now with the compulsory later spoilers and some nasty overspray.

Any more knowledge on type 928 01 on the VIN plate? I am hoping this is the first ever series.

Loving learning about 928s..it is a more mysterious world compared to 911 land..

Cheers

I think the 01 & 02 are RoW and US/Canada designations. No 00 AFAIK.

Gonna guess that it's unlikely that the mirror was left off during a repaint, they would have had to fill in the holes.

Since it's a RoW car, not too unusual to only have the one mirror.

And if I'm wrong about any of this, one of the real experts will likely correct it.

I have laid eyes on many 79 and 80 euro cars without the right mirror. Always catches my eye how clean the right side of the car looks without one.

"HEATED OUTSIDE MIRROR, RIGHT" was listed as an option on MY79. T

Interesting stuff guys.

The other 79 I am looking at that is type 928 02 is a Belgian car (I am told) unless it is a US import from a while ago..

I always used to think one mirror looked terrible, now it is the epitome of cool! Same on G series 911s..

It is quite easy to distinguish the RoW and US/Can cars, from the VIN:
1978:
RoW: 92881....
US: 92882...

1979:
RoW: 92891...
US: 92892....

I do agree that a 928 without side mirror looks nice.

I would go Bezerk with no mirror on the passenger side.

I'm tempted to delete mine as I never use it anyway. I just turn my head as these cars have no real blind spots, so I find the mirror to be redundant.

I just like that clean look.
