Hi everyone, just heard back from the dealer so I have the answer to the question of where it came from.

It's from... a cylinder mount... ouch!

The only way to get to it so they can drill out the broken bolt is to drop the engine.

Guess that makes this a really expensive bolt! Yay for having a warranty. Looks like no 991 for a week or so.

Have a Cayenne Diesel as a loaner... who here's up for a ride to Vegas?
(j/k, or am I...)

wonder how that sheared off - did you hit a big pothole or something?

Actually the opposite. Because of the shooting yesterday, the bulk of my trip home was a parking lot. The bolt snapped about 10 minutes after I parked.

Lucky the bolt sheared at the right place and time so that you caught it. Imagine if it sheared while you were driving. You would have never known. So what's a cylinder mount?

Yeah, 10 minutes earlier and I'd have no idea. Not sure what it is... think it's the external casing where the cylinders are... probably 4 bolts per mount so likely not the end of the world if I didn't know.

Not sure what he meant by cylinder mount bolt in a 991, since cylinders are now cast as part of the block. (As many of you know, older air-cooled 911's have separate cylinders that are bolted to the block.)

Maybe he meant a cylinder head bolt (#3 or 4 in the diagram).

This makes me feel like the 911 was bought from Ikea.

Jeeze, some of the bolts are really long. Hope it's one of the short ones that snapped. Doesn't look fun having to drill them out.
