87 coupe guards red/black. 160K miles. 2 owners, 1st owner owned it until 2 years ago. All maintenance records. Looks to be all original and cosmetically looks good otherwise. Asking $34K (my budget is 35 but you know how these tend to creep up). I'm not looking for a concours car or garage queen, mostly something reliable to drive a few days a week, weekends, and the occasional autocross. I have a 997 with 100K miles for daily, autocross, and rare track duty.
Reasonable deal?
My guess is you will have more rust than what you see. If it's a northern climate car, I would imagine you'll also have most of your rust along the oil lines, as that collects ALOT of debris.
But for anything in the $30k price range, you are going to have rust you'll need to get repaired.
As for whether its a good price, depends on the a few things... does the car have any documented service history? Does the car run decently well (meaning no smoke, backfires, rough idles)? Does the car have a decent option list? How is the interior holding up? Are there mostly original parts on the car or have things been replaced, modified, etc..? Are the wheels original? And finally... is the color combo you truly want?
I bought my car, with plenty of rust on it... with just over 100k miles for about the same price. Not so much rust that I couldn't drive it, but enough that if I don't do something within the next year or so, I may have more serious issues. Unfortunately I found out after I bought my car that it had a small impact somewhere behind the driver's door very early in the car's life... probably within the first year of it being driven even.
But it's an 87. there are a reasonable number of those out there unless its priced right... .
Hmm.... I'd probably disagree. The 87 model year is getting harder and harder to find right now. Especially true for coupes.
Plenty of 87-89 convertibles, and some targas... but coupes are hard to find.
This may pick back up in a few years... but right now people are grabbing these at this price point range as soon as they come on the market.
The key is that ANY 87-89 coupe under $40k is going to have ALOT of people looking at it.
