After washing car today at a local car wash, a woman and her son walked over. She said her son loved cars and wondered if it would be ok to have a closer look. I smiled and asked if it would be ok if I took him for a short drive down the street.
Great young man. Ninth grader and very polite. It was clear they were not as fortunate as the rest of us on this forum.
It's safe to say he likely enjoyed the short drive, I expect he is probably still grinning ear to ear.
As am I, its great when a little thing can make a difference in someone's day.
I'm sure there are some great feel good stories out there, would love to hear them!
Here is one from 10 months ago that I posted in another forum:
Some of the most meaningful moments in life are some of those that could be most easily missed. Tonight, I dropped my wife off at the front of our local grocery store to run a quick errand. We both immediately noticed a family looking at our car. The boys were enthralled so we invited them in for a seat and a picture. I asked them each to introduce themselves and shake my hand first.
The middle child asked my wife what type of car it was and how to pronounce it...... She said it is a "Porsch - a"
He said "Porsch - a"? Yes you got it right...... "Porsch - a".
"I am going to tell EVERYBODY in the whole wide WORLD that I sat in a Porsche with my dad!"
Final portrait with the fam. Best way to end a weekend.
I live in a largely African American city and I've always enjoyed receiving thumbs up from my community. It felt good to give something small back.
You made a huge impact. Growing up in 9th grade I wrote a paper on my dream car.... it was a 2-5 year old accord.... it was the nicest car in my neighborhood and beyond what my family could afford.
For senior prom, someone at our church agreed to let me drive their C class... he commented on how it was cleaner post me using it than it had ever been. That made such a huge impact on me and was a defining moment when I got to put my hands on and experience an intangible. It stretched my paradigm of what could be with hard work.
Well, let's stick with "feel good moment". It's a nice anecdote which gives one some hope that when politicians aren't out there claiming that people who hold slightly different opinions are vile traitors that it's possible for us to have a sense of community from time to time. That's my take-away.
I have had enumerable experiences like this. As a university professor I use this as an opportunity to lecture how I have acquired 6 new Porsches over the years. It even happened today when a young man approached me to speak about my 991 GTS!
When a young person approaches me I respond favorably and extensively. We talk about Porsches. We even take a ride. However, I take the opportunity to lecture. I point out that I did not buy my first Porsche until I was 30 yoa and had completed 11 years of education beyond my BS. I could then afford Porsches after I was thoroughly educated.
I responded to a high school person who wrote to EXCELLENCE and desired immediate purchase of a Porsche. EXCELLENCE was very supportive of a high school person devoting his limited savings for a Porsche rather than education. They gave him a detailed plan. I responded with the above and the editors and subscribers to EXCELLENCE trashed me cruelly. I even debated with the editor of the letters for several months over this issue.
I taught undergraduate, graduate and medical students at a major university in this country for 38 years. I would never agree to a barely educated youth investing his meager savings on anything other than education.
Those who will likely trash me in response to this, get a life which consists of education and understanding. We need those at this terrible time.
Freeman, I'm pretty shocked at the response you got from Excellence. I'd say you're "right on" with this one. The editor actually debated you on this for months??
Invest in yourself whether education or starting your own business. Someone advising a young person to dump their whole savings on a car is idiotic.
The payoff is much greater in the long run by those that wait and go about things the right way. Many adults can even use your wisdom

That's why 911's epitomize the aspirational car. It's not (so much) possessing the car that's so fulfilling, but moreso the ability to have acquired one after a life of hard work. When that boy sits in his own 911 30 years from now (hopefully), he will remember this day.
