Default oil filter change

question regarding where the oil filter cartridge slides onto. When I unscrewed the plastic housing and pulled off the old filter I had a metal piece with a spring, come off with the cartridge. I have no idea why it came off with the old filter but when I reinstalled everything I was getting a low oil pressure warning. I went back and removed that 'extra' piece and oil pressure was back to normal. I am baffled and last oil change was over a year ago and do not remember that piece being an issue.

Oil filter by-pass that should be attached to the bottom of the oil filter canister. I don't think it is a good thing to not have that in your canister! Not sure a good idea to leave it that way. More informed will check in on this issue. Good time to install the LN spin on filter adapter.

crap !! --- you are probably correct. Here I'm thinking that it somehow came from the top of the filter. What a dope I am. It most likely fell out of the cannister when I was unscrewing it and dropped it in the oil waste pan. Thanks so much !!!

This allows you to use a spin-on filter. The right spin-on filters eliminate the filter by-pass which is a good thing. That way all of your oil gets filtered. If the by-pass in the original canister fails it could by-pass oil for a long time. Not healthy for an engine. Yours has come loose from the bottom of the plastic filter container.

Money well spent!

so I undid the cannister, popped the bypass into the bottom of the filter and reassembled everything...I will get one of these LN adapters. Much neater and probably more efficient. Oh, and NICE COLOR YOU HAVE... ...Seal Gray ?

ngalli: Not sure if just placing it in the filter is a good thing. I just don't have enough knowledge on the system!

I think thats where it ends up anyway, since it seems to fit snuggly on the back end of the filter...pressure is a bit high right now but all else seems ok.

I took the filter housing off AGAIN...and was able to snap the bypass back into the bottom of the cannister.
Everything is back in place and looks (sounds) good. Thanks very much for pointing me in the right direction !

Yes Seal Gray over black. 2005 996 C4S. Yours...?

Hate to keep beating the drum but would strongly suggest the spin-on adapter...soon!

I would get a new OE filter canister or better yet, install the spin-on filter from LN. That canister is structurally compromised, which may lead to oil bypassing the filter altogether without you noticing it.
