I don't remember the last time I posted here. After my escapades in searching for a 944 for the better part of a year in 2013 (I think?) I found and bought my '84 back in Oct. 2014. I love that car and learned how to work on and maintain cars with it. But Friday I'll be driving it for the last time to it's new owner, a good friend of mine. I sold it to him for $1800 and a 924 Turbo.





So here's the 931 I'm picking up on Friday! It's a 1980 931 S1 with the M471 package. It's been repainted nicely but is in it's original Dolomite Gray Metallic. Just over 55k original miles. A nice Michigan survivor car without a speck of rust anywhere.

The engine has had all of it's service and maintenance done in the last year (timing/balance shaft and accessory belts, fluids, new battery, and spark plugs and wires), but because K-Jetronic is witchcraft to the two of us we can't get it to run. It's started before but it doesn't like to idle.

So this is my new adventure, I gotta get it running first.

stuff you have to check and perhaps a good order:

1.overboost switch connection
2.fuel pump relay
3.fuel pump
4.fuel pressure
5.vacum leaks
6.spark
7.timing

Brilliant! The engine isn't too difficult to work around from a glance, I'm sure I'll be able to determine most if not all of these areas.

Thank you kindly for the compliments everyone! So here's my dilema.

The car cranks and turns over, the tach bounces, but it will not start. The distributor isn't in a set position, and I've no clue which direction to rotate it equates to advancement and retardation of the ignition timing. I may need to pick up a timing light as well.

For the time being, I can at least check for spark, the fuses, and the fuel pump/relay. Also, where's the overboost switch connection located?

Its that single brown wire connected to the sensor on the charge tube...disconnect that and the fuel pump wont run anymore.
When turning over the key in first position, so not cranking...do you hear the fuel pump buzzing in the back?

I don't hear it when turning the key to the first position. But I hear it buzzing when I mess with the window adjustment, shifter, gas pedal, and a few other things. Is it supposed to buzz when switched to on initially? Because it doesn't do that.

yep, the pump should run and pressurize the system before cranking. turn on the ignition and go to the rear right corner and have a listen behind the rear wheel...you should be able to hear a buzz when the ignition is on. If you cant hear anything then probably the fuel pump relay needs replacing.
Also check that the single brown wire connected to the charge tube that goes from the turbocharger to the TB is connected and not damaged.

in the meantime here is how a 931 should run like :P
