Going to the m96/97 engine rebuilding 102 class?
Driving to the Flat 6 Innovations - M96/ M97 Enthusiast Engine Rebuild Class 102 (Hands-on), May 3rd – 6th 2017 in Georgia
Anyone from the US Northeast, Ontario or Quebec interested in cruising there for the class?
The plan is to drive through the Appalachians - tentative route below.

Have alt routes handy to get you off the mountains and back to real highways.
It's early yet, but we've had an unnaturally warm late winter/spring in the Virginia area so the traffic cold already be out.
It's a beautiful and fun drive if you hit it at the right time for foliage and traffic. It's absolutely miserable when you get stuck behind someone doing 20mph for 20 miles that refuses to pull off and let traffic around them

A freind and I will be there. Like you we had originally planned to drive, make it the road trip. Ultimately family schedules forced us onto reasonable direct airfares.
Though had had I known this sooner I might have been swayed, and we could have met up with you in WV.
Safe travels, see you there.

Make it a road trip if you can, and ensure you budget time for driving the back roads in the mountains. It was amazing! The beauty of the Virginia and West Virginia mountains cannot be captured by camera - you have to see if for yourself.. I Air BnB 'd it - also a great decision. A radar detector would also come in real handy. If not - use the Waze App (and please contribute) + a smart phone windshield mount (like RAM)

Not changing your coolant will lead to corrosion.....as evidenced by the corrosion on the gasket.
Also, the pistons were starting to make contact with the cylinders...all had evidence of the coating scraping off

A big thank you to Jake and Tony for teaching the class (and Charles for answering many parts related questions). Also a big thank you to my fellow class attendees for asking questions and making observations I didn't even think about.
This was an intense 4 day class that was a hands on engine building class. By the time the class ended late yesterday afternoon we had a assembled a long block that will be actually run as a test engine!
Everyone participated and Jake/Tony made sure every attendee performed a few of the critical steps (such as installing piston wrist pins). I went from being intimidated by the engine to having a good understanding of how this engine works and feeling confident that I can rebuild my 5 chain 3.4 engine this year.
I am not a paid spokesman. However, I can assure you that if you have any interest at all in taking ownership of the care and feeding of your M96/M97 engine up to and including a full engine rebuild this class is absolutely worth the time and money spent!
