Default First 996, Question About Factory Aero

Hey Everyone,
First off I bought this 2000 996 Carrera with 24,000 miles in TN this past weekend since I finally paid off my BMW for a DD. I've loved 996's since I was younger, and I'm lucky enough to have one this early in life. I was looking at the window sticker earlier and it says it has a speed activated rear spoiler as a part of the factory Aerokit, but at highway speeds and more importantly looking at in parked, it appears to be a fixed spoiler. The spoiler itself isn't supposed to move is it, if it is then this wasn't disclosed when it was purchased. Apologies if this is a dumb question, I've attached a picture so any information is much appreciated!

Yep, Dixie Motors. Not sure if it's true, but there was an offer in and they couldn't come up with the money so after a week of being on hold they put it on the market and I contacted them. I honestly wasn't planning on buying another car, but I've missed 6MT and the low miles was hard to pass up.

I won't lie, probably paid more than it's actually worth, but it's already the best purchase I've made. Very pleased.

It appeared to be fixed, that's why the original window sticker confused me. Is there a particular reason it was noted this way on the sticker if it's not actually speed activated?

Without a closer look, it's tough to say whether the entire deck lid was swapped out, or if that's the spoiler "upgrade" that drops into the cutout for the stock spoiler (the movable one you're asking about).

Either way, your (fairly lame) stock movable spoiler has been replaced with a much more awesome wing. This is a good thing.

Thanks for the info. Is the stock movable spoiler a completely different design or somewhat similar?

Also one side question while I'm thinking about it;

The oil pressure gauge when I'm in 6th on the highway at about 80mph, pressure sits just above 4 to halfway towards 5. Could this be an indication of something, or does it naturally run high? From what I've read it should be sitting between 3 and 4, which it does in normal city driving, but highway it appears to sit pretty high.

Thanks again for all your replies.

The movable spoiler is a cartridge; a self-contained unit that drops into a cavity in the rear deck lid. It's a completely different design. The stock 996 spoiler looks like this:

This is the movable spoiler in the stowed configuration. It's not much of a looker compared to the taco wing you're sporting.

Oil pressure reads highest at start and at higher RPM. Like most of the gauges, the oil pressure gauge isn't exactly precise...if you're really concerned, you should read the actual values.

Lots of oil pressure in my 996 is better than not enough as far as I'm concerned. As long as it drops back down to 1-2 at low RPM, I don't hear anything that would make me worry. Until you know more about what oil is in it, etc., I would rate it premature to worry about the oil pressure.

Nice car
no matter what your dealer said about maintenance.
Change all your fluids now!
Prevention is a lot less expensive than repair

My '02 needs 8 miles or so on the highway for the water to come up to temp (~180), and twice that distance for the oil to fully warm.

At ~3K RPM with warm oil, the oil pressure is ~3.2 BAR. As the oil warms, the oil pressure at 3K RPM falls from 5 BAR to 3 BAR. These are the "dash gauge" readings and have not been cross-checked with a calibrated gauge.

Guards red is the best (but I may be a little biased)! Welcome and nice pick up. What did you pay?

Its been upgraded...If its adjustable with an allen wrench it is likely a factory wing. If not, it is likely after market. Here is my 2000 but with a Mk II bumper. It really fills out the rear nicely. My 993 next to it also has a factory aero. I love both.

Your car looks great!
