+1. It's not like these cars are cheap to begin with. If you're going to put 50-100k on one it's worth it to install the solution & be done with it. If you get a chance to rebuild down the road, you can reuse the solution for the rebuild assuming no detonation event inside.
Wow, Jake maybe I was high on meds at the time, but from reading the many technical articles from sources like LN, insufficient lubrication of the IMSB was a top contributing factor to failure. Maybe "oil starvation" is not the best term to use in reference to the IMS problem?

The issue is the seal failing, and engine oil washing the permanent lubrication away.
Lubrication "starvation" was never brought up till a person that has no idea what he is talking about had to invent a problem for his "product" (that I developed first in 2007 and is actually covered by US Patent 9,416,697) to "solve".
Thats what happens when you are a practical Engineer and lose your job, and then copy someone's idea from a forum.
Got my 2001 C4, 61K miles. LN bearing done at Performance Auto in Malvern, PA. Photo of the bearing below. No issues with the bearing. Got a clutch, RMS ( which had failed ), coolant tank, and A/O separator done. Glad to have the bearing done. For the 110+/- miles I drove it, I was worried the entire time.
Doing some 40K maintenance on my C4S last week. This one was fine. I hesitate to say more for fear of being reprimanded by the being, perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness who is worshipped as creator and ruler of the (IMS) universe.
Had mine done (LN kit) along with RMS, clutch, and a few small other small things. '03 C2, Bought the car with 70k less than a month ago. Bearing and housing look good. I do feel better now that it's done. I know the failure rate is low. But I plan on keeping this machine for a long while. I still have a smile on my face from my morning canyon rip I would post a picture, but see above. Looks just like that..
Just did my 2001 986s with 40k miles using LN Single Row Pro. Bearing was fine but full of engine oil. Did RMS also (leaking badly). Followed the LN instructions which are good but I learned a few things along the way that are a bit unclear or not in the docs.
If anyone needs to rent the LN Faultless/IMS Pro tools and Factory RMS installer tool - I now have those. PM me.

It's this little gem. The PTFE seals need to be held in place for several hours to seat properly. This tool does that in addition to setting the correct depth and alignment to the crank.

Thanks. I also googled it a bit. Looks like it's a clone of the factory tool. I was hoping it's much cheaper but I think it's still like $400-500.
Many have been asking to understand how many of the 996 cars have had IMSB (intermediate shaft bearing) failures. Although the people on this board are not necessarily a random sampling of 996 owners many have asked to see a poll to get a better sense of it.

Please let us know if there were any mitigating factors (low oil, overheat, etc) that might have led to the failure

Please post what was done to rectify the failure if your car failed (CPO engine, engine out of pocket, used engine, sold, insurance fire, pushed it into a river etc)
