With several 928 racers showing interest in the front pivot clamp, I decided to give it a final tweak. Some racers prefer taller than stock levers to keep the shift **** up near the steering wheel. This puts considerably more leverage and stress on the bearing. I had minor concern that the standard bearing I selected for the stock and shorter height applications may not be sufficient for our racing brethren yanking long leavers with furious determination.
So, I located some affordable double-row sealed bearings and modified the bearing housing part to accept them. This does slightly increase the overall front-to-back depth of the bearing housings a small amount. The bearing fits within the original footprint, but the head of the shoulder bolt will protrude 3mm farther forward (towards the nose of the car) than the original design.
What this means for everyone is a stronger bearing housing. Stronger bearing, and higher precision shoulder bolt.
Here is what the new bearing housing looks like. It uses a standard M10-30-14.3mm double-row sealed bearing. Its a good thing I didin't order the bearings this past weekend.
Machine shop just forwarded some pictures of shifter parts. Looks like they will be on to anodizing next week. I am still also waiting for the bushings to come in from Igus, so think everything will arrive about the same time.
I ordered extra bushings so I can try using them in the pivot clamp as an alternative to the dual race ball-bearing.
Hans, what are the cross section dimensions of the shift stick? They look thicker than the originals in your pictures.

Thanks Hans. I am looking for the width and thickness of the shaft in the top area where the leather covered rubber **** fits. I am thinking of making a mold to replicate the rubber ***** and need to know how big to make the shaft hole for these and/or for the originals, some of which I have. I'm wondering if they are the same or different cross section wise. 7mm thickness is the same, but how about width?
Get with me off list. I already have a model for the standard ****, and was planning on making a GTS replica with a weighted insert for improved shift feel. I may be able to save you a couple steps.
Just and update, parts will be here in Indy on Friday. I will have to get them anodized locally, which should not be an issue, we have four shops in town.
Bushings still have not shipped from Igus yet. I will give them a call tomorrow if they have not shipped yet. I am guessing they did not have 100 on-hand here in the states, but will see if they will do a partial order shipment.
Lever machined parts came in today, and I have already whisked them off to the local anodizer for a bath. They should come back a pleasant satin clear by next Wednesday.
The bushings from Igus has shipped and they should be here on Monday.
I ordered some 13mm spacers for a total increase in pivot throw of 9mm which equates to a 36% decrease in shifter travel (at stock height). I figure that is a pretty good starting spacer, but McMaster stocks them in just about any length a person could ask for.
I will be eagerly testing this out on my GTS on Wednesday, and will report to the group how it feels in aluminum.
So Hans where are we? soon,I know you can't rush them but i am having trouble waiting. not much you understand you do understand right? understand arg having trouble you got it? no big deal just a little trouble, my hands keep grabbing for something that's not there but no trouble,AARRRGGGG.
Parts came back from the anodizer. I have the first lever assembled with the 9mm of offset from original spacing. I will get it installed tonight and drive in tomorrow and report back.
