Steering wheel question
Why do some of the 996's come with a three point steering wheel and some with a four point?
I don't believe it is a year of manufacturing because I have seen both wheels on the same year.

For the MkI cars the 4 spoke was a carry over from the 993 (it is a 993 part) and was the standard option. The 3 spoke was an option. I don't know which was standard/option for the MkIIs.
Most people like the 3s and many swap them in if their car has a 4. Personally I think the 4 looks better.

The 4-spoke was standard and 3-spoke was an option for Mk I cars. Aside from the number of spokes, the difference is that the 4-spoke airbag is vinyl and has a debossed Porsche emblem whereas the 3-spoke wheel has a leather airbag and a colored gold crest. When I ordered my car, the price for the 3-spoke option was $325.

Only a few 3-spoke steering wheels have the super rare silver horn crest. Rare like in hope diamond and sasquatch. I kid you not!

Not entirely correct.
The standard may be vinyl (I honestly don't know), but there was an option for a leather 4 spoke (have it and love it).
I thought the wheel was leather and the leather option just added leather on the column and the back. It's been too long though so I'm not sure.

I can never tell whether people are joking about this or not. My car has a 3-spoke leather wheel with a silver crest. No idea if that's unusual or not, but I like it since it goes better with the silver car than gold.

Just wondering as my '02 3-spoke Tip steering wheel is the silver but with red/black inserts.

Side note - are these wheels actually worth anything?
I have both a 3 spoke and a 4 spoke with airbags hanging on my garage wall. The 3 spoke wheel is in bad shape - but the airbag is near perfect. The 4 is in pretty good shape.
