Has anyone noticed how large the blind spot is on the 991 cab? What is the preferred way of dealing with this? (other than driving all the time with the top down )
Proper mirror adjustment as far out as possible (obviously you should not see the side of your car), no problem on my 991 Targa.
This. It's easily possible to set up the door mirrors such that an overtaking vehicle is seen in rearview, then door mirror, then eyes with no breaks. True there will always be a 'blind spot' over your shoulder where your eye-vision is blocked, but mirrors don't lie...
Adjustment in fig. 4 is the most important for 911 cabriolet drivers who dont have the lane change assist option
Some drivers report a sense of peripheral vision virtual vertigo when driver's mirror is rotated functionally farther outward as per fig 1 if they drive at highway speeds with HEAVY amts of oncoming traffic close -by like 2 lanes or when you are traveling in lane next to yellow line ....try that and see what I mean !
Although I drive a 991 coupe, not a cabriolet, with my mirrors correctly adjusted as shown by Need4S in figures 1 and 4, I have complete mirror coverage of all relevant cars around me that are not directly alongside and fully visible through my side windows, or ahead and visible through the front windshield. No blind spot. This has been true for any number of cars that I have owned and should be true for 991 cabriolets as well.
Of course, you could, instead of adjusting your current mirrors, drill vertical holes through the tops of the forward portions of your front fenders and install a set of vintage fender-mounted parabolic Desmo Boomerang Wing Mirrors, as I did on my long-lost Austin Healey 3000. They are still available on E-Bay and elsewhere. You see them clearly through the front windshield, leaving absolutely no chance of a blind spot.
