Went for a drive a few weeks ago around the North Puget Sound.

Had a blast for the first hour until a truck that I was following on Highway 2 outside Everett threw up some rocks going about 60mph. Its a two lane highway and I had no time to react and nowhere to go. I was about 5 car lengths back in the right lane and they still bounced off the highway and hit all the wrong places.

Two rocks cracked my windshield all the way across above the front wiper cowl.
Another took out a headlight. If you've taken one of your headlights out, you know how thick that front lens is. No idea.

Thankfully nothing worse happened.

New OEM Windshield - $1147.13
New OEM Headlight - $3430.05
Total - $4577.18

Check out your insurance coverages when you can.

This incident ended up only costing my $250 deductible and a few weeks of sitting in the garage moping.

The windshield took 6 days to arrive from I don't know where.

There are exactly zero new headlights (outside of eBay or junkyards) in the US currently and even those go for a premium ($1000+). Porsche of Bellevue had to help my body shop order direct from Germany which took 16 days to arrive. All of this after the 2-3 days of processing the claim putting my car out of commission for about 3 1/2 weeks.

Consider this a freak non-accident but still a warning. Make sure you're covered.

Glad it is fixed properly. Honestly I'm surprised they paid for OEM parts at that price. Who is the insurance company?

Most companies have caps on windshields (In Michigan that is) some have a super low $500 cap, other $1k and some more, obviously it depends on the car, but they'll push the non OEM replacement glass or you can pay the difference out of pocket on top of the deductible.

Every time I've gotten the itch to replace our headlights (MkI Xenon) that's what I've found (none in stock and long lead time).

If that was the price for just one, then the price has gone way up (last I checked it was about $3k for the pair) which will nix my plans for finally doing it when I repaint the thing

I am doing this job this weekend with a mobile service. The quote is less than $500. I am surprised. Will report back.

Say whaaaa???? 3480 for 1 headlight??? or 2? If I recall correctly they used to be 12-1300 years ago.

I came here to say a similar thing. Fixing a small chip is like 800-100 bux. new windshield is 500ish installed. I think ill just wait and see it the chip gets bigger given the cost of new vs costs of repair ratio.

I dont subscribe to full coverage insurance on toys, it doesnt make much sense to me. The money saved is better used else where for the car fund.

You'll change your mind when you have a no-fault accident and the other party is 'difficult and well represented'.
Collision-only gives the Insurance company a litany of loopholes to weasel out of doing/paying anything. Collision-only is cheap until you need to make a claim. The incremental cost is usually small if you have a good record. YEMV

to each their own. driving around here is a tad different than LA. I got a dash cam forward and reverse and it is hard to argue no fault with video evidence front and back. That said the minor risk still makes more sense than throwing away money on full coverage for a toy for me, not for all im sure, but for me it doesnt make sense.

EDIT: Ga is an AT-FAULT state as in CA. Pretty damn rare to get a no-fault wreck.

I just got a new windshield in November. $0 deductible for comprehensive, State Farm in PA.

My glass guy said SF paid for original parts because there isn't an aftermarket generic. Took weeks as they had to source from Germany.

I saw a guy listing a freshly restored 914 for just a few grand on the local CL not too long ago. He was in an accident right after the resto and didn't have full coverage.

What about uninsured motorists?

I find that a limited use, agreed value collector car policy is about half the cost of what full coverage would cost. And at least for me, the difference between full and liability only coverage cost with my standard ins carrier is actually pretty small. I'd ask your agent, you might be surprised.

Uninsured motorist is pretty much standard coverage around here for most people (me included) and is pretty cheap (20 bones/yr).
