Default RHD Steering Rack Options?

Hey guys, my steering rack has busted a seal again, so I'm looking into replacement options.

Are there any quick rack options for a RHD 944?

What about manual racks, does the RHD 924 or 931 rack fit?

My car is an '86 turbo.

the issue with manual racks is that the steering shaft has been NLA for a long time, so you will have a 30 year old used shaft. The 924/31 parts will not fit. The cheapest option will probably be just a simple rebuilt power rack.

The RHD steering shaft was still available the last time I checked,

Why won't a RHD 932 manual rack fit a RHD 944 ?

You may be right that the shaft is available...but both manual and power shafts for LHD cars are NLA. You can get rebuilt power shafts, but not manual ones.

As for why the 924 rack wont fit, it wont bolt to the crossmember #1, and more importantly the steering shaft is a good bit longer than the '44 part.

Ok, is a 932 rack different then to a 924S rhd ?

The 924S uses the 944 cross member & engine and early models had a manual rack.

Here's a 2nd hand rack

Here's one from Germany remanufactured

Here's a new shaft, not sure if power and manual racks different though?

924s rack will work, as the 924s is a 924 in name only. it obviously shares much more in common with the 944.

I've got a friend who's gonna measure up his RHD 924 manual rack to see if it will fit, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up.

Perhaps I'll find a 944 manual rack. I like the appeal of getting more direct feedback from the road, but at the same time I'm worried that the manual rack will be too slow. I already find the p/s rack quite slow, and really I'm hoping to find a quicker p/s rack.

Odds are I'll end up replacing it with another used 944 p/s rack as I can't really afford a refurbished one at the moment.

As your used to the power steering , if you changed to a manual with those stonking wheels & Tyres on I think you would regret it due to the Huge difference in effort required to turn the wheel.

Yes the Manual Feel is tremendous, which is why I adore the way a set of lightweight narrow wheels & Tyres feel, compared to heavier versions.

I tried all (4) wheels 8x16's at the weekend but I did not like the feel of them compared to all four 7x16's or ther handling! I even had wheelspin for the first time although it was cold and greasy!

I've also fitted a larger than stock 380mm wheel for more leverage and less steering effort which works really well.

The 924S rack I've got has a quicker ratio than the 924 from memory if you research the part number you should be able to find out...

Update:Found from another post: MAGK944

Regular manual rack is 944 347 011 00. 944 347 015 00 is a "sport" version that they used on the 944 turbo cup cars, you could get it on regular 86 951 or up to 86 944 too.

That sport rack sounds nice. After a quick google, it appears that it has the same 3.5 turns lock to lock that the normal p/s rack in the '86 turbo has? If so, then that would be great, I could get the increased feedback of a manual rack, without going to a slower ratio.

I think what I might do for now is depower my rack and see how I like it. If it's bearable then I will leave it depowered and search for the 015 sport rack.

Roger, is that a picture of your steering rack? Your car is RHD, so whatever works in yours would probably work in mine. Could you get a part number of your sport rack? I'm guessing the RHD sport rack is different to the LHD item?

Am I correct in thinking that the RHD sport rack is 945 347 015, and the LHD is 944 347 015?

That is my rack yes, and I've also got the steering wheel on the proper side like you !

I had this rack reconditioned in the Uk

I'm sure i could find one in the Uk and ship it to OZ

I'm not sure what this is ?

Sellholm tuning did a conversion for my 951 rack, 2.5 turns. Works well.

I tried to get Quaife in the UK to build a 2.5 rack and pinion a few years ago, but at the time I could not get a batch built. The price wasn't too bad at the time and probably even better now due to the weak pound. Here's the thread if someone wants to follow-up: https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...l#post11109801

Timm...as you modify your car further you may increase wheel/tyre size. As has been established for example, 10" all round is a good combo or even wider. I wouldn't want a manual rack with a larger setup personally. We still run the stock rack on my car.

Yeah, I'm already running 9.5" all round with 255 or 265 semi slicks, and after taking it for a drive yesterday with the p/s belt off, I would prefer to keep the p/s. It was not too bad at speed, but parking maneuvers were very difficult.

Rod, the 2.5 lock to lock sounds great! Having driven my brothers GTR a couple of times, I would love to have a quick rack like that in the 944. Unfortunately I don't really have the money at the moment to send stuff over seas to be modified, so I'm gonna see if I can rebuild my stock p/s rack for now...unless you want to sell me yours? :-)

Yes it's good, but it did take them a while, but they refurbish all the seals etc so it's like an alternative to a rebuild.
I have it in my 968 now(the road car)
