i have never seen the yellow coolant. I suspect this is what it looks like. Can anyone confirm?

That doesn't look like a standard colour, its usually pink.

I don't want to scare you but that looks very much like oil + coolant which is not a good sign. Is it cloudy and milkshake looking?

Can you siphon some out into a jar a post a pic?

No oil in this coolant. It is clear. I know Porsche used to use yellow coolant then switches to pink/violet. I want to buy coolant but want to stick with what ever is in there already.

If you currently have Porsche coolant, the pink will also be compatible. If you only need a top-up, just add distilled water. If this coolant is over 6 years old, maybe time for a flush & fill. You can use the less $ VW coolant too.

it's not very old as the PO flushed it at 50k. I will need to call the shop he used to find out what coolant and oil they used. Odd thing: if I top it off (using distilled water), it will weap out from somewhere and drip onto the left exhaust tip. Once the level is just below the min line, it stops leaking. Maybe a cracked reservoir?

Yep cracked reservoir. Here's what mine looked like (997 but basically the same).

if you top it off and it leaks before you start the engine then it could be a cracked reservoir. If it only leaks after the the engine is started and temps go up expanding the coolant it could be weeping via the pressure relief valve on top of the coolant reservoir. I would suggest you change it anyway to the pink version. My Indi changed mine because I had the green in mine when he worked on my car last. He recommends only to use the pink stuff.

Thank for the replies guys. I think I will collect parts and do the reservoir, water pump, tstat and coolant at the same time.

Right now I do not have cooling problems but it's 15 yrs old so I think it prudent to do some preventative maintenance (56k on odo).

A cracked reservoir may only leak when the system is pressurized - so only losing coolant when the car is running does not necessarily exculpate the reservoir.
