Subject: early strut insert (SACHS BOGE).
Situation: I'm looking to stiffen my ride a bit so today I started the process of replacing the standard inserts with sport inserts. I have 8 month old Sachs front struts on my car that I was planning on selling to another hombre on this forum, but am questioning the ethics of that now.
-----------
I remove the spring hat & spring. Undo the strut cartridge cap easily with no drama. Didn't even have to touch the alignment cam-bolts! Woohoo!
Then I pull the strut insert straight up out of the tube and to my surpise the rod & piston and tube came out of the tube separately with the hydraulic fluid coming out.
That seems wrong to me, as the advertisements for the strut inserts show them together, I am assuming the buyer doesn't have to assembly & "bleed" them. Correct?
Not normal. The inserts are one piece, no bleeding. Just pour some oil into the tube first for heat transfer.
Are you sure those are Sachs? I installed Super Touring inserts in my 83 and they were black and welded together (I believe, it was 3 1/2 years ago when I did them).

I thought this was normal, mine were the same. I had Sachs Super Touring struts fitted by a po and when I bought new inserts for them the inserts were sealed units that you drop in, but there wasn't an insert in the old strut, it was like yours.
I can only assume if you buy the complete Sachs strut it is build without an insert, when it comes time to rebuild Sachs supplies a sealed insert to drop in.
