I know where the paint code sticker is located on the drivers door Jamb however mine has faded completely and I cant read it any longer. Any other way to decipher the paint code? Vin #?
It should be in one the manuals if you have them. If so, it is the code where this one from mine says "L999". I think it may be in the back or under the hood somewhere too. I cannot recall and mine is put away until March.
Yes. My 86.5 is a special order color. I was just pointing out the a standard paint code would be in that spot on his sticker if he had one. Speaking of that, does anyone have any info about L999 special order paint? I have read it was like a $15,000 option back then. Any one know anything about this? That's crazy if true.
Guys - I think L999 is more correctly referred to as "Paint to Sample", not special order. In the factory WSM, each year has "Special Colors" listed. It's been my understanding that "Special Colors" were those available for customer orders only, not dealer stock inventory. My own car is one of these "Special Colors" and is not denoted by L999.
Below is the window sticker from a Pearl White Metallic 95GTS. Pearl White was neither a "Standard" or "Special" color in 1995. Note the color section at the top (9999) as well as the line item in the option section (Metallic Paint to Sample).
"Special Colors" had paint reference tools i.e. a paint code attached.
You could order a 928 in any color. "L999" technically makes it a "one-of-one" whereby a non-standard formula was used. My experience is that it usually was an existing standard formula offered by another car maker, or it was a Porsche color that was NLA.
My use of the words "special" and "order" were only meant generically, not to be confused with "special colors".
