The 928 with an auto is a great, maybe the greatest, long trip car. Owning one convinced me I much prefer a 5 spd, and leave the auto for a cheaper car.

I think as usual you have to see the performance in the context of 1982. 0-60 in 8.5 seconds back then was far below the range of "consumer cars". My first car was a Mercury Capri 6-cylinder with 3-speed auto, and I actually clocked it 0-60 took about 19 seconds. That was how things were with regular cars in those days.

The problem is once I leave my driveway.....it is suddenly 2016 with 2017 model cars as well. Rarely do I see any cars from the 1980s on the road. So yes compared to most 1980s cars which were junked long ago ANY CAR still running is faster

You are right, of course. But, it also comes down to why one is buying a car. If nostalgia factors into the equation, then perhaps keeping up with 2016 and 2017 models isn't as important. After all, many new cars are quite a bit quicker than 70's and early 80's era Porsches (with the exception of a 930 turbo perhaps). These are all classic cars. Even Ferraris of this era were about as quite too. A 1980 Ferrari Mondial 8 goes 0 to 60 in about 9.5 seconds. Yes, later ones were quicker. I guess it comes down to why one is buying the car.

Well yes, and that's why I bought a Maserati that'll go 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, and am selling my 928, but I was talking about why the 928 itself is an admirable vehicle. It's one of the few things from the 1980s worth keeping around, as long as you see its accomplishment in the proper context.
