What does a US model 4.5 with a 3 speed auto do from 0 to 60 mph?
How does that compare to a 4.7 with a 4 speed auto?

I have an 80 3speed. It's not quick off the line, but quick in the midrange. I've driven 4.7 L cars and there is not much difference. There is a 0.3 second, or so, difference in the 0-60 time IIRC.

Thanks you for the feedback.
I just bought an 82' 928 with 3 speed auto and am having it shipped to me. I am wondering how to adjust my expectations.
Does anyone have any 0 to 60 numbers?

According to this site 8 seconds. Not sure if that's for a 5 spd or auto.

Your not going to win any stop light races, but you will look and feel way cooler.

If that is your measurement of happiness you picked the wrong car. As Hoi mentioned, at 35 mph you can quickly zoom past whatever is in your way. At 70 mph you can do the same. It is a great car with superior handling. Your fun won't be from stop light to stop light, it will be out on the open road or in the twisties.
Congratulations on your new purchase. The auto transmission is very sensitive to fluid level. Also the filter kits are very inexpensive and easy for a hobbyist to change out with a fluid change.
I would put a few hundred miles on it before you got excited one way or the other.

Thank you all for the input.
I am not a 0 to 60 person. For this car, I am looking for a grand touring machine to take on long drives and some mountain work. But, I was wanting to have my expectations in line with some reality.
I was hoping to hear that it was a good "at speed" performer.

O-60 is similar to a modern sedan, but feels more effortless. I like driving back roads in 2 gear. No need to shift and plenty of power out of the turns
Running in the power band the whole time.

See the thread just posted where the Infiniti mini sport ute "spanks" a 1987 928 S4 automatic at Willow Springs. The automatic 928s are not fast, but they are special.

Just remember, the 1977 Ferrari 308GTB did the 0-60 in 8.10.
And the 1981 Gagliano Especiale Veloce' did the 0-60 in 8.2 !
That's pretty good company in my book....

I will say this, first is good for 85 mph if you bury it into the redline.
Off the line the car is slow due to the 2.20 gears in the rear end ******* it down.
When you hit its torque curve starting around 3500 rpm the car is plenty quick, especially at highway speeds as others have mentioned. Passing at 80+ feels effortless for the car.
I have an 81 3 speed auto and an 89 4 speed auto and the 81 feels more exciting and engaging to drive in the twisties and around town. Plus it gets better mpg for some reason even though I thrash it...
