Default Removing batwing

hi

Can someone kind hearted sole please give me detailed instructions as to how to remove the batwing piece on the centre console?

I have 2 heated seat switches located there. Is it easy to replace the batwing with a new piece??

thanks in advance

Pull (hard). It just snaps into place.

Might be easier to pull out if you remove the side panels I think. Those also just Pull out.

It's scary how things in this expensive car just pull out if you pull hard.

pull out storage tray right under it by putting your hand in the tray, making a fist and pull. they you can reach in and pop out the batwing.

Use a plastic putty knife. I use it to remove all dash parts. They are about a $1 at home depot for 3 of them. Just be careful and put it in between the top part of the bat wing and twist. DONT DO WHAT I DID

(Just kidding, got it all back together, I now have a 2003 dash in a 2001 996)

Is that a picture of your car. What was the reason for the dash swap - the glove box? Jeff

The reason-Insanity, it runs in my family.
Actually I wanted the stupid cup holder (Would you believe it!) The old one was so annoying, I just couldn't take it anymore. I didn't find a newer dash so no glove box. If you have nothing to do one weekend, this job can be done in 16hours, with experience, probably half that time. It was a fun challenge and I only cut my hand in 2 places. Didnt break anything either and that surprised me!

OP, I know how you feel. I'm pulling with a bike tire tool, the batwing is bowing out about a half inch and NOT letting go.
Pull hard, indeed.
To be continued.

Maybe mask your console and any other soft plastics with painter's tape - just in case. Mine pulled out with an adequate amount of force; there were no fasteners.

If necessary, pop the side trim pieces off of the console so you have access to the sides - so you can dislodge the plastic tabs that are thwarting your efforts.

first you need to remove the side cover on both sides of the lower console.

then pull the B-Wing on both sides.
shouldn't take much effort.

I pulled the sides off first, just to get a better look. Glad I did. A goof like me could easily cut/scratch the leather? covering them prying around them. Pull the rear edge straight out, then slide forward to release.
Optional:
Then pull the CD holder, then the storage bin out. Easy, and makes things easier to see if it's your first time.

Or, you can go striaight to the 2 metal clips that hold the top of the batwing. Without sliding a thin lever in between the metal tine and the batwing, I bent the tine down when forcing the batwing out. Next time will go smoother.

Sorry Meirschwartz, didn't mean to repeat you. Your computer must be faster than mine. ;-)
