Exhaust Feedback - Crackles, Burbles, Pops
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and have done a lot of searching and reading on here but still need some help on finding the right exhaust for my 997.2TT. There are so many exhausts on the market (Speedtech, Fabspeed, Agency Power, Europipe, GMG, AWE, BBI, FVD, Sharkwerks, Capristo, Milltek, Quicksilver, Akrapovic, Cargraphic, Cobb, Turbi, etc!)
What I'm looking for is a very specific exhaust characteristic: I'm looking for the most dramatic crackles, burbles, and pops during rev-down / off-throttle / deceleration.
This 991.2 (at the 1:00 mark) is almost what I'm looking for, specifically the crackles when off-throttle, with a more bass tone preferred.
I'm looking for comparative info only (XX exhaust has more crackles than YY exhaust), so please feedback if you've heard two or more aftermarket exhausts for our 997TT's. I've read so many posts that say "My exhaust sounds the best because the forum sponsor is very nice and he told me that their exhaust sounds the best!" These type of posts need not apply!
Oh, and here's a picture of my new-to-me car

In my case, Kline GT2 exhaust with 100cell cats has some decel pops, but they are subdued - no crackles. When I switch to the decat pipes, with the same mufflers, overall volume increases about 20%, and real race car style cracks, pops, burbles start coming through.
I don't know how the oem's get the sounds running through their restrictive cats. I think a catless exhaust (with an appropriate flash) will give you what you want.

Also keep in mind that on the newer models a lot of sound engineering is going on. The new panamera GTS I drove was insane, stock with factory exhaust... heads turning a 100 m away. My 997.1 with europipe or kline sounds like a toy car in comparison. But... I can imagine getting tired of it, also knowing it is a bit fake.

All the 991 series cars have some degree of overrun chatter like you hear in the video. It's most pronounced on normally aspirated cars with sport exhaust. It's there on my turbo also, although it's much more muted than it is on the normally aspirated cars. FWIW, the 991.1 turbo stock exhaust is much louder than my 997.1 turbo stock exhaust was.

991.2 Carreras have wastegated turbos that in Sport mode are open and contributes heavily towards that overrun/burble, in Sport Plus mode the wastegates close and this is why there is no overrun/burble. 997.2 Turbos do not have wastegated turbos and therefore do have much potential to create the sound you are looking for.
That being said, below is a video of our Catless Supersport X-Pipe Exhaust on a 991 Turbo S. You can see that in running this combination there is the ability for the Turbo models to have an accentuated overrun, albeit not as aggressive at the 991.2 Carrera and more so under free-rev than under load. This is caused by hard-coded engine management that changes timing and fuel delivery under throttle off condition. Due to different coding in those conditions on the 997.2 Turbo, with this same exhaust setup your car actually has a bit more potential than the 991 Turbo to have more accentuated/longer overrun/burble in throttle off conditions both in free rev and under load.
That being said, to best meet your goals I would recommend running our Catless Supersport X-Pipe. This is the closest you'd be able to get the sound you're looking for on your particular model car.

- Do you know of any 997TT clips that have this Fabspeed set-up? I couldn't find any good ones on Youtube that show the off-throttle characteristics well.
- Does the catless set-up throw a CEL (without tune?) Do I need to pair the exhaust with a tune for the car to run correctly?

Couldn't find a 2.5HP anywhere, but here's a 3HP for reference

I have EP with cats on my .2TT and i get similar cracks & burbles, especially in sport mode. Here's a good video which shows the sound(esp 1m mark) and to me it sounds almost exactly like the one you posted:

Thanks, that is the burbling I'm looking for, and I'd prefer a deeper tone to go with it.

Yes catless with throw a check engine light, although you can run our catted O2 spacers to help minimize that. With any catless setup on a turbo car I would recommend an ECU tune to optimize the software and prevent any possibility of overboosting (the turbos can spool up much quicker with that much less backpressure). However, a tune will eliminate the CEL and also allows you to access the biggest power gains of the car...we have seen up to an additional 113whp/136wtq with exhaust, intake, and a custom tune, and that's with cats on 93octane.
