Recommendation for a degreaser for the engine bay area? Something that will not harm the pain/clear-coat and acceptable for the environment.

steam cleaner with a wooden wedge for thick deposits + elbow grease

use a large tray to catch the debris and take it to a haz waste disposal at your garbage/transfer station; or mix with old oil and take to recycler

socalled "orange" oil products (limonene, usually synthetic and not from oranges)
Simple green (but beware letting it sit on Al, much less Mg)

Wurth has some products which presumably are legal in Germany - and they always have quality chemicals...

Simple Green "Aircraft Extreme" version...safe for all metals and plastics...I do not use the regular Simple Green anymore, it can leave stains and cosmetically damage some metals.

so wait .. you are concerned about an environmentally friendly product when cleaning oil sludge and grease off your engine ?? hmmmm..

Previous poster is right , be careful with simple green as it can etch aluminum and some dichromate finishes.
CFC free brake cleaner will do an amazing job to finish but I woudn't start with it .. start with some thing else and finish with brake cleaner. I used engine degreaser designed for this purpose then finished with brake cleaner.

I've seen lots of damaged electrical connections caused by the regular Simple Green.

Use the aviation version of this product!

brake cleaner last (assuming you don't polish anything...)

Well,.......

One must be VERY careful using steam due to the number of electrical connectors on these engines. Its possible to inadvertently create some real grief for yourself.

also, it really won't be steam, but hot water vapor - still big trouble for the incautious (but no Porsche owner would be incautious, eh...)

I use Simple Green for bikes. It doesn't leave a stain on alumium.



SD-20 is my basic go-to cleaner. It's almost as good as Brake Clean but without any issues.

I used the Simple Green Extreme Aviation version today and it worked very well. I followed the recommended mixture and was impressed with the quickness of the caked on oil, etc that easily came off with some quick wiping.
