Default Change to LED headlights, headlight relay clicks..

Is there a minimum amount of current required to keep the relay active?

It goes away if I add ballasts to the low circuit.

Which headlights are you using? I'm thinking of making this change, too.

A generically packaged Phillips kit.

Does it work correctly apart from the clicking?

What year is this? It is possible it is a different relay clicking? I'm thinking of the fog light disable relay - exact function varies by year.

OK, thanks- I'm installing a Trucklite type setup so this could be a good heads up. I would think the relay would not be very current-sensitive but who knows?

Ya..when the replay clicks..the lights go out for that split second (the LEDs react fast)

87 S4.

It was a hail mary..but adding a ballast to each low beam made it go away. Not proud I have to do that..to make it go away..I had my hand on the double wide headlight relay...that was the one.

160 watts LED and 16000 lumens seems like a lot for the street.

As long as its on the street, and not in the air...

Reading how vendors like to state their LED numbers, I'll speculate that this is 4x40W for the 2 dual-beam bulbs. Consistent with having 2x20W Cree LED emitters for each "filament" circuit in the tube.

Correct, these are 5w per element, total of 16 elements for low beam, another 16 for the separate high beam.

Alan:

When I got home tonight, I unplugged a low beam ballast, and the relay went clickity again, and the one light or the other if I clicked to high beam would not come back down to low beam.

Plug in the ballast again, all was well.

I remember a thread where someone was making modified covers for the H4 housings, to prevent moisture and dirt intrusion... because the stock cover can't be used when LED bulbs are installed. Any word on that?

Yeah, see Building a replacement cap for sealing headlamps after converting to HID or LED.

The project is actually sitting on the ShopBot at the moment. Last time I worked on it, I was running into problems with the material (ABS) melting during machining. I need to work on speeds and feeds and get back to it. It's competing with a lot of other higher-priority stuff.

Thanks Ed, you were specifically who I was hoping would respond. Good to know that project is still on line. We can continue the conversation about caps on the thread you started.

Also, I noticed that the lumens on these bulbs mentioned here are claimed to be 16,000. That's totally ridiculous, and proven by speedtoy's light throw picture (that is NOT 16,000 lumens, haha). The Philips Luxeon ZES chips are rated at ~240 lumens each MAXIMUM. With 8 chips per hi/low beam, that's a maximum of 1920 lumens per bulb unless you build a circuit to fire high and low beams together (on hi-beam setting)... for 3840 lumens per bulb.

Here's what 18000 lumens looks like:

Hey Ed, bumping up this post in hopes that you get it back in the pipeline. Any updates?
