AWDguy is a badass; his rebuild thread may be the best thing I've read on RL. And while the $40K he's invested is far more than the market will pay, I would argue that it's STILL not a bad value for the car itself.
Look at what else, built 99 - 05, you can buy a really nice example of for ~$30k. Drive it hard and maintain it properly for 7 years.

If you haven't driven one in anger, you are missing out. I would also opine that the mx cost of ownership will pale in comparison to the 996, so TCO would be lower, and fun/cost will be higher.
Well played, sir! I have thrashed an AP2 across a couple counties and enjoyed it greatly. But I got out with not the slightest inclination to transform my 996 into two high-strung Hondas.
For the record, I just had my '99 996's IMS/RMS/AOS/clutch/pressure plate, and DMF replaced, AND brake, engine, and transmission fluids changed by a highly regarded indy. Total cost = $4800.
Yes, Porsche mntce. is expensive, but I don't consider $4800 to be excessive, given that my car is 17+ years old w/83K miles. The ONLY major expense I've had in the past has been the replacement of all four rotors+pads+sensors for about $1500...done two years ago.
As I type this, the car drives like a new car; and I should (hope to) be good to go another 83K.
At this point to have all the work you had done on any make or model would cost you $4,800. That is allot of parts and labor. Just had a bunch of the same work done and for the piece of mind I am more than satisfied as I am sure you are.
