Update - I decided to go with Speed Yellow. Here are some in progress pictures, more to come once installed. I figure if I don't like the yellow I can get it repainted. I also have some yellow seat belts coming from Maxspeed Motorsports to round it all out. The lighting in these two pictures is different hence the shade of yellow looking off on them. It turned out nice. What a pain in the *** to reassemble the ashtray door and armrest though...

We used DuPont ChromaOne, its a single stage so hopefully more durable for interior use.

Looks great! I just did mine also in Arctic Silver Metallic at a body shop. I concur that the reassembly is a pain. Definitely a worthwhile mod that makes the interior look more classy and exotic.

Yellow looks great!

Was black exterior paint on the console factory option? I looked in the '04 brochure and it mentions "rear section in exterior colour". I haven't seen a pic of a black painted console though...

I sanded mine, got a few cans of black matte plasti dip. Matches existing radio surround. Spent a $20 bucks and it isn't permanent and It holds up well.

centexsi - can you tell me what was done for surface prep on yours? I assume you removed the soft touch stuff? How?

I did this same project and used:
EM 38353 Plastic Prep
SEM 39133 Flexible Primer Surfacer
www.automotivetouchup.com Arctic Silver Metallic 92T
USC Spray Max 2k High Gloss Clearcoat Aerosol

The console I painted on was in rough shape so I removed all of the paint on it with 400 grit wet sand and then used 800 then 1500 grit. Then I cleaned it with Plastic prep and a Tack cloth.

I put three layers of Primer on and used the tack cloth to clean the surface between sprays and after the primer had dried a bit (after waiting 15 minutes). After waiting a few days for the Primer to dry, I then put on 5 or so sprays of paint and 4 sprays of the Clearcoat with 30 min between sprays.

Its been a year now and my center console looks just like it did right after I finished the job. I think many light sprays was the key with time in between each spray. The finish seems very hard and has yet to scratch.

For those who have asked, the original was the soft touch matte black finish and it was peeling in a few spots. It was sanded down to bare plastic (400, 800, 1500) then primed and finished with the single stage paint.

Yeah, the Speed Yellow does scream "look at me", which is actually the thing I hate the most about it. My last 911 was black and I liked that but the yellow just looks so nice - it was the car I had on a poster when I was a kid and that always stuck in my mind.
