Asked a representative from leading wheel manufacturer of technology these days (i.e., flow form) makes cast wheels as good as forged wheels when it comes to strength and weight. Here was the response:

"Almost. Flow-formed wheels will still be a little heavier, primarily because of the center/spoke area. The forming process alters the grain structure of the metal, aligning it such that it is nearly indistinguishable by an untrained eye. It improves strength and rigidity to "near-forged" levels but at a substantially lower price. We supply flow-formed wheels to Porsche & Ferrari among many others. Many race teams also use them like the BMW GT4 & Mustang Boss 302 in the World Challenge series."

Luckily though, as you mentioned, there are solutions in the aftermarket which are substantially better for performance, especially now that we have 991 R101LW sets which despite being 20x8.5" weigh as little as 16.50lbs and the rear 20x12 weighs 19.4lbs (991 Widebody Fitment).
Can you put a pic of a P101 and R101 side by side? What are the differences? Maybe thinner spokes?

For wheels that have "less meat" and more an open design, I've only seen true FORGED wheels accomplish that. Can get away with less material and keep the strength.

I must be blind. How do the P101, R101, R101LW differ?

From a visual standpoint the R101's tend to have a slightly thicker spokes than the P101's. There are also changes in the backpadding. Plus R101's come with standard knurled lips - continuing the trend that it is the motorsport focused version of the P101.

Looks like the first pic has a concave center while the second has spokes flowing through the hub.

What is it with some of these guys getting wider wheels that stick out past the edge of the tire??

See that with the tuner crowd.

All excited about deciding to go with BBS FI wheels as first mod for base build and find out that they are not available. They appear only available for 2016 911 R, GT3 RS and Turbo S models.

The HREs are nice but I've always had a thing for the FIs.
I still can't believe they are not available for most 991s.
