While Magnus seems like a good guy and has limitless cred, I have to admit I'm a little confused why everyone needs a selfie of themselves and Magnus..."here's a selfie of me with Magnus Walker (who was taking a dump and therefore couldn't get away...").

Must be the dreadlocks.

Exactly, so it really doesn't count as a regular 996. Let's move on...

It's a start all of us who were born and raised on air cooled 911s take a certain amount of time to come around I started with a 996 Cup Car as my first water cooled 911 now my nice 1999 996 sits in garage along with it love them.

It took me along time to come around from air cooled 911s to a water cooled 911. Change can be a hard thing to accept for a die hard air cooled 911 owner. I am now a happy convert.

You all had better not let the 993 forum guys see this blasphemy...you'll lose your air-cooled street cred - and probably have the patch ripped from your jacket in some weird air-cooled ceremony of shame.

On the plus side, the public shaming in this case is with cups of water rather than stones, so I expect you'll survive. Good luck.

Maybe he stepped-up to the 996 GT3 for the better handling...those old 911s can be a real handful.

I have owned many very nice air cooled 911s for 25 years now. I know the reality of living, owning, racing, concourse showing and cross country touring with them. Don't let any one tell you they are superior to a water cooled 911. There is the romantic idea of those old cars and then there is the reality. The good old days of performance 911's are now with the water cooled cars. We are living in chapters 2 of the 911s evolution and the air-cooled were chapter 1.
There was a needless infection of elitism that started with the birth of the 996 and it took a lot of unnecessary crap because it was the first major upgrade in the history of the 911. Don't buy into the air-cooled superiority many like to perpetuate. It was one chapter in a long history of where the 911 is going.

Ugh.....The reporter seems pissed.
I am shock a guy with Magnus experience with older 911s would make such a basic 911 driving mistake????...Its a pretty obvious 911 faux pas.

Heh. It doesn't matter to me if some people need to feel cooler than me. I also have a '96 Corvette - and just like with the 911 crowd, 99% of other 'Vette owners don't care one way or the other, and 1% think it's just not a "real" Corvette if it isn't a '63 split-window coupe.

The beauty of the 996 - to me - is that it is both a good car in its own right and approachable financially. But your comments are definitely appreciated...the 996 has been pooh-poohed for too long - and I suspect it ain't over yet.

I also get the nostalgia factor - and truth be told, there is something cool about driving an antique. I remember that feeling driving our MGA coupe down the road, listening to that fuel pump hammering away, appreciating the oddball reality of +12v chassis ground...and I also remember the sad reality of standing there peeing on the driver-side brake linings on the shoulder of the 405 because I had nothing else to use and I didn't really want flames to get anywhere near the carburetors.
