Default US-Bound BMW M4 GTS Will Have Roll Bar Option

I've long been a skeptic of the excuses put forward for not being able to get a factory roll bar or even pre-installed mounting plates in the GT3; DOT regs, safety, liability, yadda, yadda, yadda.

It's nice to see at least one manufacturer stepping up and providing a real roll bar option for their "track focused" cars.

From R&T's recent First Drive article:

"Sadly, neither the seats–nor the fire extinguisher fastened behind them–will make it to the US. The Acid Orange half rollcage–a no-cost option in Europe–is factory fit, however, and we're promised 'bucket-style M sports seats' that include 'lightweight back-rests with cut-outs.'

And the actual US parts list:

that's good to hear. I've always found it odd that Porsche did not provide this even as an option on their GT cars in the US.

Wait, am I missing something.

The R&T article does not say that the roll bar will be an option in the U.S. only that in the U.S. "we're promised 'bucket-style M sports seats' that include 'lightweight back-rests with cut-outs.'"

In fact, for context here's the entire passage:

Our test car is fitted with gorgeous fixed-back leather and Alcantara bucket seats that are generously proportioned and balance daily-driving comfort with exceptional support. Proudly flying the M tricolor and showing a flash of carbon-fiber buttock as you open the door, they have a much more bespoke feel than the fabric Recaros in the last M3 GTS. You can even choose how to be restrained: regular belts or six-point harnesses are both fitted.

Sadly, neither the seats–nor the fire extinguisher fastened behind them–will make it to the US. The Acid Orange half rollcage–a no-cost option in Europe–is factory fit, however, and we're promised 'bucket-style M sports seats' that include 'lightweight back-rests with cut-outs.'

There are plenty of other articles out there that confirm US cars are getting roll bar. Online R&T article was poorly worded; the print version is much clearer.

As to the seats, US cars are not getting the really good seats - think 997.2 RS ROW lightweight buckets that we couldn't get. US cars will get a different sport seat, likely similar to lightweight sport buckets on current GT3/RS.

Yeah, I just spoke with my BMW SA, and he confirmed that the internal dealership ordering system indicates that all U.S. cars come equipped with a roll cage, fire extinguisher and rear seat delete. No other options available, except for choice of colors (and no BMW Individual Colors).

No leases, either.

Interesting to see the fire extinguisher not making the leap across the pond. I wonder if it is simply collateral with the remitted fixed-back buckets.

This seems to contradict the R&D article in regards to the fire extinguisher. BMW's ETK (their internal parts system) is by no means infallible, it could just mean that they are available as a separate part.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see what reality is.

i was wondering longtime about all the missing cages in US...

at least US Porsch guys can cool down the envy - based on the look of the welding of the M4GTS cage midsection stiffening plate. looks like my first welding attempts at 12 years old

but from some steps away or from sitting in it and looking forward - it doesn´t matter.
