And if it comes off when you are unscrewing the filter, that means your filter was too tight to begin with.

No,
Because TBN and TAN trend data collected over the last decade proves that the oil in these engines is trashed after 6 months of service.

As in 6 months in the engine or 6 months of being used? A lot of these cars, mine also, only see the outside world once a week. Is 6 months as DD == 6 months in the engine?

6 months calendar time... No matter if the engine is being fired up, or not... The oil is still in service.

The absolute worst thing for engine oil is sitting around in the sump. Sitting around kills these cars.

Thanks for the clarification Jake!

I'm wondering the damage done to the ones that have two-yearly service schedule. I believe this came in for all 2004+ cars.

Perhaps this was done for marketing, to make these cars look better to leasing companies?

It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard... Hell, we love it.. What an economic stimulus for our entire industry.

If someone has my engine, they are on a 6 month/ 5k MIle service interval at maximum.

Jake - Have you ever seen any studies related to oil degrading just sitting on the shelf? I'm assuming it only degrades inside an engine because it's "contaminated". The reason I ask: sometimes I buy a batch on sale and it sits for two years ....

How does oil go bad sitting in the sump?

I had a tech tell me it "goes bad" in 90 days. I suspected he was quite full of poo and simply trying to boost service fees.

You have lots of research to do. Sitting static in the sump builds higher "total acid numbers" than anything else.

I have 21 Porsches... I change the oil every 6 months whether I drive them or not. Same for my military vehicles and daily drivers too.

Having done my own research first hand for 15+ years, no one has to "tell"me anything.

Since DT40 is not available in my area im using Motul Xcess 5w40. I read its a good oil for the m96 engine. Any thoughts on this alternative?

This is a good question. I am planning to get the spin on adapter but according to LN "Porsche approved oils of 0w40 and 5w40 are acceptable - use of thicker oils not recommended."

My Indie put in Swepco 15W40 last change, I'm hoping to continue using that.

EDIT: Unless Jake tells me I am insane.

At the moment I have 5w50 M1. And yes, I don't have access to any DT40 Joe Gibbs(?) magic liquid in New Zealand.

I will probably use M1 0w40 or Castrol 5w40 or 0w40, although from what I read 5w40 or 5w50 oil will be better as the engine gets older.

I've just started using spin-on from early June, and have been using 5w50 previously. It's a Porsche A40 oil anyway.

Fingers crossed hoping that this thread won't trun into an oil thread!!
