Default VIN Location question

Is an 84 supposed to have a vin tag on the passenger fender in the cut-out area? See pic for specific area referred to.

I believe mine does, Ed.

I'd post a picture, but some dumba** deleted 200 pictures...of the black (84) and red cars (78)...from the tablet yesterday. I guess snapping a picture of the engine compartment would be a good start for another collection of photos. Sure glad I posted a ton of pictures here and can retrieve most.

Are you saying the area cut out on the fender/wing, which should contain a vin, is blank? The tag is actually secured to the inner fender wall.

Brian.

it appears to be blank from the above photo, unless it was painted over. Hard to tell, will need to look to be sure.

Doesn't look like mine has one there. Out of town today but will check closer when I get back.

It's been painted over. When I had my car painted they did not tape it off but I caught it and had them tape off the area to keep it original looking. If I recall that VIN stamping in the frame has the ROW version of the VIN.

Is it a stamp, tag, or sticker? Pics?

It's a stamp into the top lip of the inner fender, with a cutout on the mating lip of the outer fender so you can see it. Mine is painted (can't see how it would be otherwise, unless the factory masked it off).

And this is the location where the VIN will always show ZZZ, regardless of country spec.

Pics from my 84 Euro.

Interesting. I'll have to look at mine closer. Being stamped Ed should be able to see it on his even if painted over.

Something looks odd with the VIN cutout on the outer fender in Ed's picture, compared to yours and mine. In Ed's picture, the outer fender lip in uninterrupted, whereas in yours and mine there is a break in the area of the VIN.

Pic from my '90 GT, for comparison purposes. I'm pretty sure the '78 doesn't have a VIN stamped at the passenger fender area.

Please don't mind the dirt...been driving old blacky daily for a month and a half. Last year, the weather was so horrible, I'd drive the car, park it for a week or so waxing and waiting for driving weather. This year...turn the key and go!!!

Anyhow, 84 vin...and ironically...from New Jersey originally (according to owners manual).

Mine is more like the red car Ed posted. Although, the vin number plate is unpainted...but has fender completely around. I think you guys got some "hot" cars or something...hope you didn't pay more than a few hundred for them...lol.

Old red, 78.

Hmmm...that is strange. Not sure why mine and BRB's have the outer fender lip cutout completely where Brian and Ed's look to have a window cutout. Wonder if the factory changed that during production run in '84. Or perhaps one style are replacement fenders?

This is 78 #613, when I was trying to get at the blue hose for replacement...okay...l got a little carried away...lol. No, when I was disassembling it, but it looks like there is no vin number on the inner fender lip. Was kind of wondering if there was one below old reds fender/wing and thought I remembered seeing a tag there on #613 while apart...but I was wrong as usual.

Yes, 6GTixer...I believe you guys have stolen cars...and probably should do what's right...and turn yourselves into authorities asap...lol.
