Default Painting the fan...

I will paint my fan and housing. I see many posts of people doing it with spray cans or Powder coat.

1- Which is better Powder coat of regular paint is more than enough?

2- I read stories about fan rubbing on the housing due to the paint thickness. Anything I should know to avoid that?

3- Do I need to paint inside the housing? I'm just scared of the fan rubbing on the housing

Thanks for your help!

I will post pics once done...

If I were you, I would google search, "negative effects of powder coating cast magnesium" before proceeding forward. More specifically, read page 468 of this link to Magnesium Technology: Metallurgy, Design Data, Applications.

Thanks! Only the fan is in magnesium, not the housing, right?

Recently DIY painted my fan and housing. They look good, but I can't comment on durability since they're not installed in a running car yet...

I'm not a metallurgist, but I think the housing and the fan are both magnesium. There was a bit of discussion on it here earlier this year: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...l#post13187997

I painted my old 964 fan with VHT high temp paint. It looked great but the engine heat kept softening the paint and every bit of dirt and grease would stick to the fan blades. I've never had that problem using duplicolor high temp paint on other applications. Other than that I had no ill side effects.

What I was told:

Fan and housing on NA 993s are magnesium. 993 Turbos have aluminum housing to supportthe weight of the intercooler.

I considered painting my fan (Gonzilla suggested pink and offered to have his daughter Bedazzle it for me) but decided to just leave it alone. At some point the leading edges will wear, and I figure that will look worse.

Anyone have a sample of a pink bedazzled 993 fan?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for providing the link on coating of magnesium to this thread. If I read it correctly, power coating should be fine, if the magnesium parts are first outgased using a preheat to accomplish that. Once outgased, the parts can be cooled down and then undergo normal powder coating procedures. Is that your understanding as well?

Regards,

Ernie

If there weren't so many negative connotations, I would suggest we change Opo's name to Trump.

You just can't out do that cat.

Can't wait for my next trip to Houston. I will definitely ask for an invite.

I would powdercoat it. Powder coated the fan and it looks and holds up great after 5+ years. I painted the housing not too long ago, and it scratches easily and looks like crap.

One more thing. It is A LOT of work to prep and paint the fan & housing. Endless hours of scrubbing. Or just pay $150 to a pro powder coat shop and have it come out durable and perfect.

And yes, you will have to tell them where not to powder coat. And yes, you will probably have to sand down the edge of the fan blade to prevent rubbing.
