No. It's just the spring/summer bump. This is a high value for a MkI, but still within the norm we've seen the last couple of years.
MkIs: high teens to low twenties with the occasional mid-twenties thrown in.
MkIIs (non-4S or AE): low to mid-twenties with the occasional high twenties sale.
4S/AE: high twenties to low thirties with a rare 35 to get people's attention.

A part of it is that more people are aware of the IMS and the availability of many options to address this out there along with acceptance of this risk vs. reward.
The many articles of the risk vs. reward that peg the 996 as the performance car bargain of the century from major publications also help drive demand which brings up the price a bit.
The poser owners that weren't truly enthusiasts to begin with dumped theirs awhile ago so now you have more true enthusiasts holding onto them and actually using them. This will start bringing down the inventory of the really great examples out there, allowing them to eventually fetch a premium relatively in the 996 market IMO.

The difference is production numbers, I think - they made less than 10,000 E39 M5s worldwide, whereas 996 sold like 30k a year through the first few MYs (total run of ~175k). This is already happening with the C4S market, but it'll take more time for regular and especially early 996es.
Not a complaint though - the volume makes parts easy to come by and relatively inexpensive, so it's really a more accessible platform that should have support for a long while to come.

I think it has much to do with the rise of air cooled 911 values, which have priced out a lot of potential buyers and forced them to look elsewhere for an "affordable" 911. I think this interest has helped push up the values, and will continue to do so.

This is going to lead to a lot of "conflicted" air-cooled guys, especially when their wives start refusing to ride in "that stinky old one with crappy air conditioning."

I agree. Rising tide and all. And wasn't the 964 the pariah of the 911-world until it wasn't? Same thing will happen one day with our 996s.
