It's behind the fender liner on the driver's side fender in the rear

Rear of Front fender.
More likely the tubing has pulled off of one of the barbs.

Exact same behavior on mine, didn't notice until now. Weird thing is it seems to hold 1/4 ok but a top off leads to an empty reservoir.

@Alpine - thanks for the diagram/clarification.

Got the same issue as well. I'll have to dig into it and see where the issue is originating from.
Let this thread know if one finds a good solution?

I fixed the same issue in my car.
Will post some pics and step by step instruction tomorrow.
In my case it was leaking from the wipers pump (I have two pumps. One for wipers, other for headlights). I was thinking it's the rubber seal, but it ended up being the pump itself.

ty! I noticed the fluid mostly drained on the driver side towards the back end of the door frame. Some residue on the lower left under side ridge.

Hi all.
my car is a 2002 C2 with litronic headlights, so the water reservoir on a non litronic might be smaller, but i believe the concept is the same
so this is how you fix it.
first step, you will need to remove the plastic cover that goes on top of Water Reservoir filler neck.
remove the cup, and the torx screws holding the cover.
once you have a view of the filler neck, pull up the small plastic tab (Red arrow) and pull it towards the center of the car (yellow)

this is how it looks once removed. basically the part that is marked with the red square, is sticking into the water reservoir.

remove the left front Wheel-Housing Liner.
you need to remove only the parts marked as 1,2 and 3 in this diagram.

now look towards the front of the car.
remove the two bolts and the plastic bracket. if you have litronics, that is a good time to disconnect the water line quick-connect that gous to the headlight.
unfortunately i have no clear picture of that, but it is part #5 in the diagram. just push on the tab, and it will disconnect.

now look towards the back of the fender and you will see another bolt holding the reservoir. remove it as well.

you can now disconnect the wipers water line by just pulling it. it is not secure, and just pressed in.

to remove the reservoir from the car, you will have to firmly pull it towards the front of the car.
the reservoir is attached to the vehicle via pins, that are pressed thru a rubber . i took me some effort, but it came out. one of the rubber grommets stayed on the reservoir, but that's not a problem, as it can be easily transferred back to the car, or pushed back as is.

now, when the reservoir is detached from the car, you can have a look at the pumps. the pumps are both pressed in thru rubber grommets. between the two pumps there is a rubber piece that holds them in place. don't lose it, and watch the white line, representing the location of the rubber piece during assembly.

once the reservoir was out, i inspected the two rubber grommets holding the pumps.the grommets obviously act as seals a s well.

visually, both grommets looked fine. not dried or cracked.
so i installed the two pumps back , and placed the reservoir on a bench and filled it up with water to the top.
i noticed a leak coming from the bottom of the wipers pump where it meets the grommet (green).
still hoping that the problem is with the grommet, i replaced it. $2 at my local VW dealership, or you can go to the porsche dealership and get the exact same part (same part number) for $6. whatever makes you happy.
long story short, the leak was still there with the new grommet, so i inspected the pump closely, and notice there is a small hole in it, just like they have in water pump.
so new pump in, problem solved.
notice that the same as for the grommet goes for the pump.
you can find it going anywhere between $10-$40.

good luck.

If your 996 has headlight washers, then the reservoir will have two pumps instead of one.

A common problem seems to be leakage around the pump's base. (See item 12 in the diagram.) When this occurs, the reservoir will leak fluid all over the garage floor until the fluid level falls below the pump's base.

FYI-I replaced the rubber seals on both pumps, but the darn thing still leaks. Oh, well.

Default Part Numbers

Hey all, I know this is an older thread but this is exactly my issue right now.

Great tutorial but can anybody tell me what the parts numbers are for the grommets/seals? I am having trouble finding them at FCP and my dealerships are being super unhelpful. One of them simply said 'they dont have them!' as in the car doesnt have seals on the windscreen and headlight washer motors....great knowledge!

Any help would be hugely appreciated
