Default Any updates?

Btw, was your engine a used engine or it was a rebuild by MBM?

Rebuilt by MB Motorsports.
I have had a layer of very fine, black ferrous particles stuck to my magnetic drain plug since the first oil change at 900 miles, and every oil change since then. They said this was normal, but I don't see this on my other, non-Porsche vehicles. I have to wonder whether such particles could help the valve lifter to stick.

I haven't figured out anything new yet regarding the rough idling and it hasn't changed.

I've gotten two P0430 codes--catalytic converter efficiency low on bank 2 (which is not the bank on which the valve lifters were replaced). When I rev up the engine on the freeway (say 10+ seconds at 4500 rpm) and the top is open, I usually smell hydrogen sulfide, implying that one or both cats are dying. I'll probably get the same Carnewal cat insert replacement as you did, since they seemed to work well for you.

My 996 code diagnostic manual from Pelican Parts says for codes P0420 and P0430 to check a valve connected to the charcoal canister. I hope to do that soon. The manual also says that these codes are only given if the oxygen sensors are operating correctly, so I don't think I have a bad oxygen sensor.

Any pic of the mag drain plug?

Re P0430, it's most likely the cat itself. The proper diagnostic is to monitor the O2 sensor voltage pattern (I have many threads on Renntech.org on this). Another alternative is CA legal direct fit cats from Magnaflow. Ask "kromdom" here since he just did that and had good results. Also a 5yr warranty.

Since your engine has existing issues, I think it will be better not to complicate it further by using the 200-cell sport cats.

I found that the Magnaflows were the only CARB-approved direct-fit cats and was interested in them. Then I read somewhere on rennlist that the Magnaflows tended to die after about two years of use and that the five-year warranty was tough to use.

It's really a shame your vender left you high and dry on this.

Looks like the vender also has a motor add on ebay but doesn't mention their name. Why wouldn't you mention your company's name?

I'm not defending Martin but he did give the OP option to ship the engine back to them, in which case he decided not to but get work done from another mechanic instead. Now you introduce another variable to the mix.

It might've been just that ad that was left out accidentally as he does mention his business name in other products he's selling including another engine.

Sneaky Pete, why don't you defend your guru in the other tread? After my last post i don't see any responses. In case you're not aware it's the one titled "2004 996 was told engine needed rebuild-help". I caught him lying about his bad work and now he's hiding under a rock not knowing what to say. Maybe you could advocate for him?
BTW, I could go with 4th name change just for the heck of it to give you something to yap about. I have to repeat again mind your own business and stick to construction and 2x4's. Don't worry about my business, only thing you should be worried about is how to make another dollar to pay off your credit cards.
Vender is spelled vendor btw.

It's funny that you mention SNL characters because our other resident vendor("your guru") reminds me of Stuart Smalley.

"I'm smart enough, my engines are good enough...and doggone it people like me(I have the poll to prove it)...and if they didn't I would take my ball and go home."
