I'll just give it a go I think. I will replace them with ARP studs anyway, so they will come out one way or another.
Another curios thing I came across is some sort of sand like crap in the coolant passages...is that just remains of my head gasket, or sediments that have built up over time, or something else? I don't have a good photo of it.

I had the same sandy substance in my coolant too. I cannot really come up with a good answer other than something precipitated out of the coolant by mixing different types of coolant or maybe there was a stop leak product put in. There was a lot of it in my engine and it completely filled my oil cooler housing.
I think your bores look good and if you are putting in new rings, I wouldn't worry about the carbon lip in the cylinder when you take out the pistons. I would imagine a solvent like mineral spirits would dissolve the carbon pretty well and not etch the aluminum, but don't quote me since I had my block sent out and bored.

I'd defer to Bruce or Sean's thoughts but to me they don't look too bad. If you get a little puff of smoke then so be it. Rather than going to the next level (bore, sleeve, new block etc) I'd stick with what you have. But see if either of the Buchanan's give their opinion.

I had tons of silt in my water jacket. Machine shop jet washed it, then used an ultrasonic bath for $40. It's physically gone, but the rusty stain is still on the outside of the cylinders.

Finally have a couple things to update the thread with.
All the machining is done, the head has been refreshed and almost all of the parts for the rebuild have arrived. I'm just waiting on the cometic head gasket and a turbo rebuild kit.
In the meantime, I cleaned and painted the engine bay.
And all of the parts have been cleaned. I also did a lot of painting.
I decided to paint the manifold, ic pipes and throttle body in wrinkle black...
..and the cam housing in wrinkle red.
Should look pretty good once it's all together. The masking also came in handy to spruce up other areas of the house haha ;-)

Thanks mate.
Looks much nicer compared to how filthy it was before.
You can't really tell in this pic, but there were lots of scratches and the white had yellowed quite a lot.

I just let it stay on the hot midday sun, that did it But I also painted my 911 valve covers in winter and had to bake them because well, sun is not too warm when it is -25c outside. I put them in the oven (dragged old oven to workshop during kitchen makeover).
