Question Does my engine need these particular lifter gaskets?

Hi !

1981 Euro/ROW 928S,
Engine block stamping number is M 28 / 11 8210164

Can anyone please tell me which figure-8 lifter gaskets are used on this engine?

My machinist says I need them , but they weren't in my replacement set...

I have searched the archive and there are different thicknesses, depending on year and engine type?
Just need some expert hand-holding (ha ha)
Here is a photo taken from the RL archives to show the type of gasket: (Sorry that was unclear prior to editing this post... forgive me)

Here are the only photos I have of my particular engine at the lifters, if this helps clarify things..

Thanks ! ! !
Dan

It looks like you have the removeable lifter sleeves so yes you will need those gaskets

Yes, you need the figure "8" gaskets.

You also are about to use my custom cam carrier gaskets, which are made for use with cam carriers that do not have the removable lifter inserts.

You can use my cam carrier gaskets in this application, however trimming will be necessary!

Use your old gasket and trim my custom gasket to match

Thanks, Greg.
I'll contact Roger and get the figure 8 gaskets on the way.

NOTE be careful that you have infact removed the old figure 8 gaskets they are very thin and can almost disappear on the surface they were mounted on.

NOTE before fitting the assembly to the head make sure the outer tower gasket will infact clear the lifter bore inserts and that the lifter bores do not stand proud of the tower gasket,
otherwise the lifter bores will lever the tower and thus one side of it will not fully seat and a leak will ensue along the top edge of the tower.

NOTE use a feeler gauge along the edges of the tower after assembly to verify that the tower has seated. if the feeler gauge fits into the tower then it must be removed and the gaskets changed preferably before its been started

Where do these go? Between sleeves and head or between sleeves and cam tower?

the gaskets fit between the lifter insert collar and the cam tower ,
take out the collars ,
then scrape off the gasket,
it will be like a piece of wax paper.

Thanks, Stan.

I've been leaving them out as I didn't see what difference it made. Sure, oil won't leak down from the sleeve but it'll flow up, into the tower just as readily. Also, they tended to tear on installation as I twist the sleeves.

Glen,
The way I read your post, you are leaving them out on purpose?

Yep.

I've done the head gaskets a bunch of times and finally decided that those weren't valuable. Or that I didn't "get it" and found them to be a headache anyways.

Oops, just looked at your pictures. Do not duplicate the old gasket....it is incorrect.

You don't want the gasket to overlap the liter inserts. Just trim the new gasket to clear these.

The "figure 8" gaskets are designed to raise the lifter inserts above the surface of the cam carrier the thickness of the outer gasket. When the cam carrier is tightened down, the lifter inserts are them held captive and are not able to move up and down in the bores of the cam carrier.

Do not, under any circumstances, leave the "figure 8" gaskets out. The movement of the lifter insert in the cam carrier will destroy the aluminum cam carrier.

So the purpose is as a bushing and not a seal. Thanks.

Dual function. Seals the oil flow and spaces the lifter sleeve.
