Your alarm controller is clipped to the body bracket and the clip has scratched it. The alarm controller is not in this location on my car and the bracket is unscratched, leading me to conclude the factory installed it in one of the other known locations. I found it deep down and within the center console, with the blue connectors facing the firewall. The hacking of my alarm system therefore did not happen so close to the controller. I feel a separate alarm thread coming...I'm kinda surprised the car starts normally and so far no other ill effects after removing the cheap alarm.
I removed all clip splice fittings and bandaged the original wires with electrical tape.

Dave- Could it be that the location is inconsistent during a period of production overlap? I've heard stories of early 88s (which mine is) having lots of on-the-shelf leftovers installed. Ivan's is an 88 S4, too.
For those who may be curious, the alarm controller in my car is larger and the case is aluminum (silver box under the black plastic air handler). Something to keep in mind if you don't find it behind the glove box or under the passenger seat.
Behind the glove box I found the same bracket, a common location for the alarm controller. Note Ivan's is scratched by the clip securing the controller to the bracket. The bracket in my car is unscratched and there's no wiring in the area. This lead me to look elsewhere.

The silver box under the air handler is an alarm? I have what appears to be the same box on my '82 and I didn't think mine had an alarm in it...
