Default "greater than" and "less than" signs cause text to disappear

I occasionally use them to indicate "not equal to" - used to work

like this:

one of these things the other

^ ^ ^ this is an image of what I typed

But now they seem to be interpreted as html tags and everything between the symbols , is just disregarded and does not appear in the post

Yeah, I know, first world problems

It is a new feature implemented to cut down on all the quoting you do in every single post.

In another forum I'm on, where the multiquote function is either broken or disabled, I've had to manually multiquote. Not quoting is confusing, singly replying to each comment is post-whoring and also time consuming (when you are catching up to a multi-page thread after a weekend)

Hi, I have noticed this problem for a while. It's particularly annoying since my username has the "less than" symbol in it. So anytime anyone tries to quote me, their entire quote (after the header with my username in it) is blank. Most users don't know what went wrong so it prevents anyone from replying in the forum or via PM to me. My functionality is way down as a result. I believe this is worth correcting for the entire community.

Moderators, PLEASE fix this for us. Thanks.
