Door stay repair: '89 911, severely damaged but fixable
Hello Rennlist.
Just acquired a new to me 911 and it had a shredded driver side door stay. Hole torn in door jamb, metal backing piece pulled off. Still fixed up nicely with the PParts kit. Had to reduce detents on door stay AND shave rubber bumpers inside door stay to reduce stress on the fix. I left the broken bits out and simply sandwiched the remaining metal. Difficult to bend the torn edges of the hole flat - a small channel pliers worked best. Also had to file the inside edge of hole in the "outside plate" as it hit the door stay hinge point on the door jamb when closed. Now all is good. Pics for anyone who is facing this common problem and wonders if the kit will work on their shredded door. It will. Time will tell how long it lasts.
Key lessons:
1. Fix door so it doesn't swing too far while stay is disconnected
2. Absolutely put a string on the "outer plate" when you position it between the door skins
3. Attach four allen bolts for armrest with door pocket in place before reassembling rest of the door panel
Thanks for looking, hope this helps in your repairs

Thanks Randy - after posting this I figured out it was in the wrong place and have yet to determine how to move it. My second post I manage to put in the right 911 tech forum!
